How to scan a small picture at high resolution?

I am using the HP 5200C table scanner with HP PrecisionScan Version 2.02 software in Windows XP.

How can I scan a small 3x4 color photo at the highest resolution and color?

HP PrecisionScan only allow me to scan the entire 8.75" x 11.75" scanner area, regardless how small my photo is. This software is quite stupid, or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you.

There should be a preferences option in the scanner program. If you scan at the highest resolution, the picture will be quite large on the screen but will print at actual size. I don't know about your HP model, but when you see the image on the screen, you can with your mouse click one corner and drag a "selection", it's usually a series of dotted lines. Do a "pre-scan" or "full-scan". The scanner should present that 3x4 image you need. If your HP program doesn't have that option, then scan it normally and crop the picture with an image editing program (ie photoshop).

I have a HP4400c with Version 3.12. That's what came with my scanner. To change the resolution, I go into Tools, Change Resolution, and up it as far as I want. I don't know if that will work with your program or not.

Photoshop is on the costly side. If you don't have it and don't want to spend that kind of money, Paint Shop Pro is very reasonable, and there's a freebie called Irfanview that is very popular.

PhotoShop is way more photo editor than most people need. PS Elements is their simple version, highly recommended.

Another good freeware editor is VicMan's Photo Editor...
