I keep Skipping (bad thing!)

I really enjoy sewing and my trusty Singer and I are usually very happy together. Though I am quite experienced I've never sewn Jersey fabic before.

I have a lovely new knit dress pattern and have been out to buy ball point needles and the fabric.

I'm using spare fabric left over after cutting out to practice with.My stretch straight stitch is going fine, but when I try an overedge stitch to neaten the edge it keeps skipping.

I've tried changing tension etc, but need some inspiration!

Can anyone help please.

Most jersey fabrics don't need neatening. Just give the edges of some of the scrap a good tug: if it doesn't ravel or ladder, leave it alone. :)

If the fabric contains Lycra/Spandex (elastane) threads, you will need a STRETCH needle to get the best results. Many ordinary sewing machine over-edge and stretch stitches don't work well on this type of fabric. They work best on heavier cotton knits like sweatshirt fabric.

In addition to what Kate says here, if you have a Singer machine, you

*MUST* use Singer brand needles with it. _Especially_ if you are sewing knits.

In all honesty, I've always use Schmetz, Rhien, Klasse, and Gros-Beckert in all my Singers, from the 1923 Singer 99K up to Little Sis's 1980's entry level Samba 4, the 117 Featherweight II that Big Sis has, and the tiny 100 Featherweight (plastic nearly toy), and I've NEVER had a problem! I don't like modern Singer needles at all: cheap and brittle compared with the German made needles. I've had far more faulty-out-of-the-packet Singer needles than all the rest put together, so I just avoid them these days.

I sew Lycra knits on all of them using Schmetz stretch and Super Stretch needles, and nary a skip or bother of any sort.

Fair enough. I had problems with my mid-line Singer that were usually solved by swapping to a Singer needle (those that weren't were solved by either changing the thread or the stitch), and the 99 I have is really not happy when I use my usual Organ or Schmetz.....

this is, apparently, one of those YMMV things. It is, however, worth a try if nothing else works.

My computer is being Very Funny today. It replied before I said anything. I wanted to toss into our needle talk this YMMV event. Recently I ordered some embroidery machine stabilizer and Nancy's Notions included a free sample Klassé universal needle. That needle may have been flawed. It could have been the moon - but the Bernina said she was not going to stitch with That Needle and to take it out immediately. Miss Bernina is such an agreeable SM and will put up with about anything but she surely did get contrary with the Klassé. Polly

Been using Smetz in both my singers for about 15 years without a problem.
