How important is cutting on grain when you are working with a 4-way stretch fabric? Would the type of garment make a difference in the importance? Cheryl

It is rather important, if you don't get the pieces on grain the seams will twist. On a shirt side seams will twist round the torso, in pants the seams will twist round the leg. Rather uncomfortable in my experience from WTR tops.
Even with a 4 way stretch material, it would make a big difference. Barbara in SC
In addition to the comments (I totally agree with) about how important grain is in general....
You also need to make sure the 4 way stretch is even in all directions. Sometimes it will stretch more in one way than the other. If you have a difference in the amount of stretch, you will almost always want the greater stretch to go around the body not up and down.
