industrial blind hemmer malfuction

I was wondering if anyone had any kind of idea what is not working on my blind hemmer. It's an older model Lewis industrial machine. Here's the problem: when I try to sew with it, the hook isn't picking up the thread to make the loop. It doesn't pick up the thread at all. I've tried to adjust the tension and the height of the rib part to no avail. I've broken about 8 needles in the process! I don't have a manual for this machine and cannot find any info on the internet. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks, Darby Paxton

First be sure you are using the correct needle. You do not list a model number but most of the Lewis use 29-34/29-49 system needles. If new correct needle does not help, it could be many things but the usual suspect is the needle guard. It is a flat piece of metal screwed on to the shoe, the needle rubs on this as it passes. It becomes grooved and does not do its job, hence the skipped stitches. Next could be looper adjustments. Both these are best left to trained professionals as they are tricky adjustments.
