iron on vinyl?

i am making a tablecloth for the kitchen (to replace one that didn't fare well in a dogfight... why do the dogs only fight in the kitchen?). it's a pretty lightweight cotton print, and i have a rather messy 5 year old, so i thought some type of vinyl would protect it from spills (but not dogs, i know) & add weight. TSWLTH has iron on vinyl in 17" wide... good for placemats, i suppose. does it come in 44/45" width? and if it does, would it still be machine washable or wipe off only? lee

It might be cheaper and more durable to buy ready coated stuff... I have had some lovely stuff in the past.

OTOH, if you really WANT that particular cotton, why not make it up as a table cloth just as it is and cover that with a loose top of clear vinyl?

Lee,

I've not seen it any wider than the placemat stuff. I would say it would become wipe off only if you could find some wide enough to do a tablecloth. Or at minimum machine wash, hang dry. I don't think it would do well in the dryer!

You can get clear vinyl wide enough. It's not iron on though. Might just be easier to buy a clear vinyl tablecloth. They aren't very expensive in the discount stores. That could go over the table cloth you're making.

---ps maybe they fight in the kitchen so they don't break anything in the living room?? ;)

i wash my clear vinyl shower curtains all the time (i have a clawfoot tub, so there are 2 clear curtains & one "dress" one on the room side). i'm a big fan of line drying things anyway, so that's no hardship... except when it's below zero. not much room for hanging big stuff like tablecloths in the basement. linens dryed on the line are easier to fold & have less wrinkles. i was just thinking that the iron-on vinyl might delaminate, like the iron-on hemming stuff does. however, knowing it exists gives me more ideas for placemats & tablerunners... both easy to just wipe off.

i have a piece of vinyl somewhere around here... never let other people pack up your stuff for a move... 6 years later & i still haven't found everything :p i actually think a clear vinyl piece is the best solution. then i can change the fabric whenever i like :)

there is less to break in either of the adjoining rooms (living room on one side, dining room on the other). i suspect it's more because they prefer an audience & someone is almost always in the kitchen. lee
