Ironing board pad

Is felt a good material to use as an ironing board pad? What's on my board now is what came on it and it seemed/seems awfully thin. I can actually feel the metal surface of the board when I iron.

Any recommendations????

On mine I have a double layer of an old, badly felted, wool blanket, with the "official" ironing board cover on top of that. It has been on there for many years, in fact it got transferred from an old ironing board to a newer one.

I have two felt ironing board pads and a nailed on cover made of plain boiled cotton calico. great!

Oh, except where I singed it, but that just left a mark, not a hole...

I made mine from the good parts of an old wool-filled mattress pad.

If you haven't any suitable rags, quilt shops sell wool batting.

Wool felt or poly?

Gee, I don't know, I would have to ask. I suppose wool would be best?

My ironing surface is a 2x3 foot board (Menards) covered by 2 layers of an old wool army blanket from a thrift store, stretched and turned and tacked on the backside. That is covered by white cotton drill applied the same way. It can be renewed as needed without disturbing the wool underneath.

I made a stand to set it on (loose) and use my 2x3 cutting mat on top of it when not ironing to conserve space. I have another piece of 2x3 wood to place on the stand for an alternate work bench to place a serger or sewing machine on . Works like a charm. Bill B
