Jacket with elastic stretch at bottom, getting rid of it?

I just recently bought a jacket that is one of the old 70s style Vietnam type army jackets but this isn't a normal one, it was made somewhere else and the back of it has little strips of elastic on the bottom sides to tighten it up when it's all buttoned. I was wondering if there was a way to get rid of the elastic inside those and have it looser and not be so tight fitting on the bottom. I don't dress with the top ending at my belt area and would like it to go down and I think removing the elastic would help. I have very little sewing experience and was wondering if there is any advice on how to get it out?

Hard to know without seeing it, but I'll hazard a guess. You can probably open the casing, and just cut the elastic (leave it in place), then stitch the casing closed.
