Jig Saw Puzzle Pattern Directions Thanks to 2yo DD!!! What a Laugh!

I had a funny episode today with my 2yo DD. I decided that since the older DD was back in school (finally) that I would reward myself for surviving the summer. So I bought New Look 6609.

I am making the skirt without the ruffles out of some lightweight pink plaid wool, and the jacket without ruffles in cream linen-look (whatever that means, polyester I guess) with pink lining.

I let 2yo DD "help" me cut out the pattern pieces, I gave her a bunch of blank tissue paper from inside the envelope and we started cutting away. I was so involved in what I was doing that I didn't notice her take the instructions out of the envelope and proceed to cut them up into little pieces. She was half done when I noticed. so I traded her all the little pieces for some tissue paper and put them in a ziplock bag for later. We finished cutting all the pieces we needed after awhile and then her favorite show was about to come on, so I settled her on her own "big comfy couch" (thats her show!) with a sippy cup of milk and her own doll to watch it before lunch.

Now I had my chance to save my instructions. What a chore that was. Half of each page was untouched, but the rest was cut into very small pieces. I finally got it all taped together though. She thought she was so clever...

Now I am off to mock up this pattern, I know it will need adjustments, the smallest size will be too big because of the enormous amount of ease. And also because I am only 5'3 and the skirt will be a few inches too long (25" finished length, I need about 21" or 22")

Whoops!! Glad you saved it. What a pain. *sigh* I remember the days when I could get a lot done during Big Comfy Couch or Barney. ;) Although I always had a little guilt when I pulled out the vacuum to get dust bunnies under beds or the couch. ;)

when Boo was 2, he made a jigsaw of his linen shirt cuffs & collar while i was called away to a phone call. he then brought them out to show me he 'helped'. i have them in a ziplock bag in his baby book :) cuffs & collars are easy to recut & don't need much fabric for a size 2.

he is still, at age 6, not a fan of the vacuum, so that only gets done when he's outside or at school. dust bunnies can wait.

Two is a tad early, but six is old enough to learn tom sew! Teach him to make stuff for himself. Start with things like a shoe/PE kit bag, and by the time he's 12, he'll be sewing all the name tapes into his own clothes - like James today! Four pairs of PE socks, 5 shirts, 2 pairs of trousers... I did 16 pairs of knickers, a lab coat, 3 pairs of shoes, a pair of footie boots, a rugby shirt and a CDT apron... Next time round I'll teach him to use the blind hem stitch and he can sew up the hems on his trousers himself. :)
