Kate Dicey - A question please --- Very OT

On BBC America there is a show called What Not To Wear with two stylists name Trinny and Susannah. I really enjoy the program and a few times when they are evaluating a woman's wardrobe they will say she is dressing like a "Sloan Ranger." Very curious, could you enlighten me as to who or what this was??

I can't find an official definition just now, but the Sloan Rangers were an 80's phenomena: posh girls who dressed in flower print skirts, velvet jackets, and frilled white shirts and who 'worked' in the posher parts of London. Lady Diana Spencer, who became the Princess of Wales, was the ultimate Sloan Ranger.

That's because they were named after the London address: Sloane Square, with an 'e' :-) . Term supposedly coined by Peter York in his "The Sloane Ranger Handbook" of 1982, when he was also Style Editor of Harpers and Queen.

Generally a term of mild derision. Think of Tim-Nice-But-Dim, or, if you must, Python's "Upper Class Twit Of The Year Race"
