Kenmore 385 16622 threading

I have a Kenmore serger 385 16622, the #1 thread keeps breaking. I have re-threaded, have threaded different ways, followed the manual and am ready to throw my serger through a window! I have adjusted the tension also, from so loose it is sliding and right up to 4 (others set at 3) GRRRRR. Has anybody else had this problem and if so, what did you do? I have repeatedly had this problem. The repair people say it is just getting the tension right but I don't think the tension should be this sensitive.

Sometimes breaking thread can be the result of a bent needle. Have you tried putting in a new one, not just a different one, and see if that helps??

First rule of serging: if something's not working well, it's time to take ALL the thread off the machine (spools off the spool pins, too!), give it a good vacuuming, oiling, and clean the tension disks, new needles, then rethread from scratch, manual in hand.

Amazing how often that fixes everything.

Oh, and what are you calling the #1 thread? Lower looper? Upper looper, needle thread?

Oh pooh, somehow I missed the part about the machine being a serger. I'll butt out and let y'all solve this since I don't have serger.

New needle still applies! :)

Possibly something is catching thead(s). Look for burrs on the stitch finger and stitch needle(s) on the needle plate, also on the loopers and needle guards.

On a serger, like a sewing machine, bent and/or dull needles can be the source of many headaches of threads breaking. Ask me how I know, even after having a serger for 20+ years and sewing for over 65-years. Emily
