kiddie towel with hood?

I'm interested in making a sarape-style bath towel for a kidlet...not the kind with a triange at one end that acts as a hood as for little babies, but basically a bath towel that hangs in front and back of child with hole in the center and a hood to pull up. Anyone done this? Any clues for inexperianced for size of hole (e.g. measure circumference of kiddies head and add one third), amount of cloth for hood and best stitch to attach? Is the towel material available or is it cheaper to get a bath and hand towel combo at Costco? Anyone ever made terry dog ears? TIA blacksalt

There are directions to do exactly that in the Singer series book "Quick and Easy Sewing Projects". I have made them from these directions and they come out great. They have ears ,a face and feet in the front, I added a tail in the back and sewed up the sides and left large armholes. I made them out of bath towels,it takes 1 and a half towels ,I get 2 coverups out of 3 bath towels,if you buy them on sale,it's not much. I got nice ones for $3.99 each.

A hole big enough to go over a kid's head is big enough to slip down over his shoulders. I'd make it just big enough to be comfortable around his neck, slit it down to his navel, and leave ends on the neck binding to tie in a bow. (Or form one end of the binding into a loop and sew a button on the other, or . . . )

Another plan would be to put buttons on one shoulder, or sew up side seams and make it open in front like a vest.

In his age group, I think you are right. The ones I saw on 8 year olds just had a hole, but at this age, the head is still king. Kidlet goes to the Y every day and drying him off as he gets more mobile is trying Papa's talents. Thanks for the heads up. I think I can just make the neck opening my a quick measure and open it more if I need to. Should a hood go around 3/4 or the hole or less? Should a hood be the height of the clavicle-to-top-of-head plus a quarter? blacksalt

Is there a picture of one of these things on the net somewhere. Tried Googling but had no idea what to call it, just came up with the baby bath towels with the hood in the corner. I'd love to make some for my friend's little grand-kidlettes.

There is also a Kwik Sew pattern (3080) that is a hooded towel. It says a small needs 1 1/2 yards of 60" fabric and a large needs 2 yards. And there is a SewBaby poncho pattern

that could very easily beadapted to using terry for a swim cover-up. Elaine, are those books out of print? I checked Amazon I could only find used ones (though there are plenty of those).

Sorry to butt in, but I just bought a copy of this book on Amazon. New condition for $.77 plus shipping... what a deal.

I just looked it up on Books in Print and it is under out of print, but it's status is "out of stock indefinitely", which means you could scout out a new one at a store, but it's probably much easier just to order from the used section at Amazon (though I've had so-so luck with stuff I've ordered through the used dealers so I'm always a little hesitant to go with them first). Looks like a good book to have though!

This would be a terrific project for teaching a child to sew, too!!!

This is a wrap, not a serape-style thingie, but it looks big enough for a kid. The "corner hood" ones Carter's (e.g.) sells are for wee ones, and Wee is not that wee anymore. Thanks. That looks like even I can do with great confidence. It also looks like one can shorten the distance it goes out from the hood, and sew another length of cloth to the front along the shoulder line and leave gap where the hood is. blacksalt
