Last weeks of 2007 - Sewing related!!

Sew.....I took inventory of ALL my fabrics (apparel AND quilting) and discovered that, in my little 10x12 (and that's being generous!) room, I have over 350 yards of fabrics!!!! After recovering from the shock, I decided it was time to start taking what steps I could to decrease what I have on hand (if it's stash, that means I haven't been doing as much sewing as I could/should).

Over the past few days I've mad:

-3 skirts for DD (knee-length because we don't allow anything shorter)

-1 jumper for DD (see above, and probably will be too big right now, but great in a couple of months!)

-an apron for myself - to protect me from the thread bits of the serger (yay!) and misc. sewing adventures

-3 fleece sleeping bags, 1 of which is actually big enough for me to use...supposed to be toddler to elementary school age, maybe I could offer them in longer sizes, for older kids...who knows

oh, and prior to Christmas, I finished off the beading on the Elizabethan court gown - wanted to do attached necklaces as opposed to hunting ones up that looked period enough. Pastor's wife wore it for the Choir Christmas Cantata....after additional alterations....it was WAY too low for our conservative church, so I had to find a way to cover the cleavage...lol. In the end, it was dubbed the middle eastern Elizabethan gown because I made the front pieces of a belly dancer's choli and whip-stitched them to the shoulder and under-arm seams....according to everyone (and by now it's been most of the church) who has told me how gorgeous it was, it looked positively beautiful .

On the non-sewing activities....I just finished the tentative paperwork for taxes..yeah, I know, sue me...but, we have itemized deductions...LOTS of stuff went to Goodwill this past year...and we have DHs college tuition, home energy credits, etc. etc. so if I get a ballpark figure now, I won't be so stressed when we finally get all the paperwork that we actulaly need to do the final version.

Let's see......helped my friend mix up a series of bath salts that she is going to try to sell at the March craft fair (have to get application in soon so that we have a table)...hmm....other than trying to cut down expenses and pay down debt, that's what I've been up to...how about you guys??

Larisa, not a math person, but dang good at finding extra deductions

Finally made the effort to dress a doll who's been wearing nothing but a smile and a pair of knickers for the last 9 months or so. I started the dress that long ago, but.....

She's posed to have one arm going more or less straight upwards, with the other arm coming more forwards as though she's leaning back whilst holding on to the ropes on a swing. The vertical arm comes out through the top of the shoulder, and it's made dressing her a real nightmare! Most of my dolls have arms posed more or less conventionally, but when you think about lifting your own arm vertically and what it does to the body shape and how clothes drape on the body, well, you'll get some idea of why it's taken me sooooo long to work up the enthusiasm to finish her off. Still she's dressed now, with a lined bodice and lace overlay for the bodice, and an extremely full net petticoat that I finally had to stitch almost entirely by hand to get the gathers right![1] All I've got left to do now is to dress up a large flower basket on which I can seat her.

Then I have a 30" doll, 'Tatiana' by Ali Hansen, moulded and painted with warm Mediterranean tones to dress as an Edwardian Bride, Audrey is doing the groom to match, 'Lord William' by Audrey Hamman, although she's still undecided as to whether he'll be in morning suit or military costume.

Just before Christmas we happened to buy a telephone table which is shaped like a small chaise longue - we were actually looking for a very simple round occasional table, but herself saw this telephone table so our hoped-for £50 expenditure turned out to be more like £300 - and when we brought it home Audrey happened to say ' You know what would look nice on that, a large nubian style doll, partly clothed, harem style, reclining back on the seat', so now we're waiting on the blank bisque before we start arguing about who is actually going to make and dress her.....

[1] Memories of when we first met nearly 50 years ago! We were both keen ballroom dancers then and on only our second date, I escorted Audrey home on the bus clutching a net petticoat on my lap that she'd just had made by someone at the dance school! :-)
