Lemonade from lemons or where to get enough steam when needed

When our dear Sharon Hayes, who I wish had time to post here sometimes, sent me directions on how to put in an elastic waist band, told me to steam like mad when I finished sewing the band. My poor little iron isn't doing a good job producing steam any longer. I wondered what I was going to do to get enough stream going. I had just changed the elastic in a skirt I made a while back. Here's the lemonade from the lemons. I pulled out my hand steamer. I bought it recently to clean my shower. Boy did I get steam. The elastic is now tightened up and the stretch is back. I love that little steamer even more now. Juno

YAY! I love to find new and clever uses for tools I already have on hand. Not that I'm opposed to buying lots of additional tools, understand...

Thanks so much for passing along this tip to help get the stretch back into elastic. I certainly will try it and I hope it will help with elastic that is 3 years old. Barbara in SC

I think it's really a technique for restoring the

*dimension* of NEW elastic which stretched out while being sewn into a new garment, rather than OLD elastic which has probably lost its elasticity. :-(

Well, I remember that a few years ago, I stoutly resisted the thought of using a steam generator. However, since I've tried it first I'm hooked and I really love my Tefal. Only yesterday I found a new use (well, not that new, but it was first for me): Currently, I'm taking pics of things that will have to go via eBay. The garments, even the poly items, were sadly crumpled. I knew that a quick dunk in cold water might have remedied this but of course I didn't want to wait that long. So I hung them up on clothes-hangers and passed the iron with steam over them. Worked miracles on the crinkle chiffon dress and fair enough on the coat. Steam - it's a kind of magic... End of musings. ;-)

Somewhere in this house, I have a Jiffy steamer. An older one with a metal head on the wand, rather than the later plastic one they use now. I got it originally to block knits and I think the one I have (which I bought second-hand, of course) came out of a dress shop where they use Jiffy steamers to steam the wrinkles out of new merchandise before hanging it for customers. It's a wonderful thing and very easy to use especially since it has wheels!
