Looking for 14-oz or close in weight denim-type fabric that is NOT blue

I need some sturdy-bottom-weight fabric of a 12- to 14- ounce denim or equivalently-durable type that is *NOT* blue (I *****HATE***** blue), hopefully in a medium-intensity shade that will complement a 75% autumn/25% winter color palette and DEFINITELY that isn't something like $25 per yard, and I am having a real bear of a time finding something online. I don't really want to go into the local TSWLTH and look, even though they just moved and I have to admit the store looks a lot less trashy in their new location.

Is there a short way to do this apart from requesting swatches? Or does anybody know of a place that sells it that I could just go there? I have spent HOURS searching online and looking at all the fabric stores I know of, and it's making my head spin.

TIA mucho mucho, Melinda

I'm planning to make my summer slacks from Wm. Booth, Draper's "russia drill", but I haven't ordered the fabric yet, so I can't tell you how good it is. It's a light natural tan which I think will go well with all the shirts I made for the "oakwood" slacks that wore out so quick.

under "hemp fabrics". The slacks I made from James Townsend & Son's haversack linen held upvery well, and were very comfortable in hot weather and when I gotdrenched by a couple of unexpected events, but they were as ugly as amud fence.

How about a heavy twill, duck, or canvas? Denver Fabric has some non-blue duck, though the range in weights is quite broad based on a spot check. I suspect that most of the twills will be too light but sometimes you can find some really heavy ones. I fear the canvas will be too stiff.

I already looked at Denver Fabrics (one of my favorite drooling places), and I can't tell what the weights are of their fabrics by ounces, but I am pretty sure that "midweight" is going to be too light. The requirement I have to meet is "sturdy denim jeans or equivalent" as far as abrasion resistance goes. I have looked at hemp fabrics, but $20-plus per yard is just too much.

I suppose if I get desperate, I could take two midweight twills and use fusible web to fuse them together. :) But I'm not THAT desperate yet.

Did none of the answers you received when you asked this same question in January work for you?

Perhaps a review of that thread will give you some direction?

That was about what fabric to use, not where to get it.

This is in the home decor section, but no reason you couldn't use it to make pants:

It says medium weight denim. When I've ordered medium weight denim from them in the past, it has been probably 12 oz. I am sure, however, if you call them, they could tell you more what the weight is close to. 5 different colors, none of them blue. $5.35/yd.

Well, that's encouraging. Everywhere I have read, it has said that medium-weight denim is 10 ounce. Thanks!

Denver almost always lists the weights of their fabrics in the detailed descriptions. That is one of the things I like so much about their web site. Some of the weights are also noted on the list when you do a site search.... like this:

If that link no longer works, here is a red, 18 oz duck for instance:

If that doesn't work, just search on "duck" or "canvas" and you will find a number of hits. All have their weights clearly listed.

When in doubt, fabric.com chooses the lighter description. Their "handkerchief linen", for example, is more like percale. (Old-time soft percale, I mean, not the polyhecto-count cottons being passed off as percale these days.)

LOL!

You tickled my funny bone twice now, Joy!

And speaking of percale, I'm having a darn difficult time finding some nice men's all cotton poplin dress shirtings.

Do any of these look good?

Well, *somewhere* in all my searching this past week I know I have seen someplace that has a poplin category, and when I find it, I will let you know.

You probably thought of it, but have you searched specifically for upholstery denim? That would get you to heavier denims and I know I found a fair number of them when I was looking to recover our loveseat a couple of years ago. Shades of blue still dominated, but there were others as well. And of course if you find white or natural, you can dye it the shade you want.

You know, I have seen upholstery denims, but I have sort of passed them by because I didn't know how heavy they were.

Will the person who is looking for the denim please repost. I didn't think I could help you so I deleted your message with the specifics of what you wanted. Thanks, AK
