Looking for fishnet stocking/pantyhose/body stocking pattern

Was taught the needlecraft arts (crochet and knitting) nearly forty years ago by my great-grandfather. I'm currently in the midst of a "contest" to create a complete outfit (sans shoes) with a female friend of mine.

*Everything* in the outfit must be handmade, right down to the underwear, and any other included accessories. Judging will occur New Year's Eve by a five-person committee consisting of our mutual friends. I'm partial to crochet and have a black evening dress, hairpin lace shawl, and matching gloves currently in the works. I'm even working on a 1940's-style ladies handbag to go with the outfit. And am considering a simple "choker" as an accent. The big puzzle for me is the underwear...I've been turning the crochet catalogs and Google up-side-down looking for a crochet pattern for fishnet stockings/pantyhose/ or body stockings, but have found nothing that matches the "sexiness" of the other pieces of the outfit i'm creating. I'd also like the underwear to be comfortable for my "opponent", so i'm torn between making a simple full slip, and skipping the stockings, but was hoping someone on this newsgroup could point me at a few commercial (or free) patterns that a classy 37 year-old lady would feel comfortable (and sexy, but not slutty) in wearing them. Was also hoping the patterns were for crochet, as i'm ten times better at crochet, than i am at knitting... Any help or references would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice...

I'm just brainstorming here, but you can find a Renaissance pattern for making cloth hose (they are out there), and if you used a sheer nylon tricot or another sheer fabric -- lace drapery sheers, maybe? -- with a seam in the back you would have handmade hose. I don't think you are going to have the time to make fishnet hose, but if you were going to make them you would need to use a teeny-tiny thread and chain X number of stitches (I have no idea how many but I had a high-school friend who used to make ponchos this way) then one DC to the previous row to make it like this (view in monospace font):

\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

That's four rows' worth, and it would make a perfectly respectable fishnet hose, but there's no way you could do this by hand and be done in time.

- I love Angelina, tho' I couldn't be having with the floppy sleeves.Maybe knitted stockings are more popular because knitted fabric is more elastic that crochet?

You could go for that authentic WWII feel and skip the stockings, making do with a line penciled up the backs of the bare legs to simulate stocking seams.

I like that suggestion "authentic" WWII apparel...

Interesting project JRV. I have seen, and may still have a Vogue crochet pattern from the 60's / 70's for a bikini - and it was reasonably racy. Would that or a similar pattern be of any use to you?

Fishnet stocking are not crocheted, they are netting. Not a pattern for stockings, but some good diagrams of how to make netting.

Hi Sarah,

Absolutely. I can't imagine Vogue doing anything too racy...

As long as the pattern includes adjustments for appropriate bust and hips sizes, then i'd be willing to buy the pattern ASAP. There are a number of free patterns for bikinis on the internet, but they don't really have that retro/classy look i'm trying to create. (They tend to have that 70's hip-hugger look, or more like something you'd see on a sixteen year old, rather than a near-40 year old business executive...)

As to the stockings, i've found a simple toe-to-top sock pattern, which i can do in #10 mercerized crochet thread through the heels, and then i'm going to do thin hairpin lace strips and stitch them together with a stretchy thread. At the back, i'll "close" the stocking around the leg by stitching the hairpin lace together, having the desired side effect of creating a nice seam down the back of the leg...

Haven't decided whether i'll do a garter belt, leg garters, or lacy elastic tops to the stockings... I'll have to see how the basic stockings and the other parts of the underwear turn out...
