looking for flat seam sewer

I am looking for a flat seam sewing machine. They are typically used to sew flat seams for swimsuits and cycling shorts. I have tried searches for commercial flat seam machines and cant find anything. Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you in advance !!

the seam you want is called a top loop cover stitch. Once you have the correct name you should be able to find one. Pfaff TOL serger does it too.

Yes, it does. I love my Pfaff serger. Emily

you HAVE the 4874????? Please tell me more. Bernina's foray into top loop cover stitch machines for the home were best described to me as "overpriced doorstops".

Spefically, I'd like to know about how it handles a variety of materials, how finicky it is or is not, and changing from standard to top loop cover and back again - I have a serger that I'd probably keep for seaming.

Penny S. Actually, I just have the older 4872, DD has the 4874 and it is a dream, yes. I've used it when visiting her and have sewn mostly fleece on it. She sews much more than I do, using a variety of fabrics and loves the machine more everytime she does a new project. She's never had any problem switching back and forth, but I do have to tell you she has a wonderful dealer, that has given her lots of lessons which she has passed on to me, since I do not have one like that. Does your use needle system EL X 705 (or is it 750?). I got a nice Pfaff 4852 on eBay, but wonder how limited I am going to be by that needles system as it come in only 2 sizes - 80/12 and 90/14, not to mention that thoey aren't made in the various points such as mettalic or ballpoint. How limiting is that?

Huh? the 4852 does not do a top loop cover stitch. Perhaps you need to repost your question under a RFI for pfaff serger needles.

You might take notice that most all sergers/overlocks are limited to the

80/12, 90/14 needle sizes. The reason for this is the close proximity to the needles of the loopers and needle guards. If you put a larger diameter needle in the upper looper and the front needle guard would hit the needles and cause problems with the stitch at the minimum and may even damage those parts.

It seems to be a moot question for my serger, because smaller than 80/12s don't seem to be made in that type needle. However, is it possible to use

60's or 70's in a serger?

Thanks, Ron!
