Looking for info on old Singer Machine

I have an old Singer 4302 machine. I have the manual, but I can't find anything out about this machine. I'm curious when it was made and other general info. This is just for curiousity's sake, but if anyone knows anything about this machine, please let me know.

Thanks, Richard

Email Singer - there's a link on their web site - and ask them. They will tell you the date and place of manufacture.

I think that line is more than likely from the 70s.=20

Three great lists on Yahoo will help with identify and dating your machine. Singer, Vintage Singer and Wefixit. Terrific people and a wealth of knowledge. Many Old Singer men and women on those lists. You can find them through Yahoo Groups.

Past experience tells me to take a lot of what they tell you with a large pinch of salt

As I understand it, the numbers were recorded by hand in ledgers, probably using ink. Then the ledgers were photocopied and copies given to various customer service reps that answered the phone. Some of them may have had copies of copies. Or even copies of copies of copies. So, if they were able to make out the letters and numbers, they could give you a fair approximation of the date. These dates now available on their site should be from the original ledgers, which we hope didn't suffer any coffee spills. It is the best available, though.

These are all new sheets. Graham Forsdyke of ISMACS fame has been instrumental in getting the Singer information updated and reproduced on this site. Several other well known collectors and archivists have also contributed. Very, very, little salt needed with this list now. Graham is very accurate in what he does and it has taken him years to do this .

I second Nana's advise. I'm on a few of the YAHOO groups Graham is on, and up to now he has been the *only* one who could answer most of the dating questions....he posted the informaiton yesterday that the data is now on line, and it's the exact same data he's worked with for years.

Oh good. I've been using a copy of Graham's stuff for years- ever since he told me not to trust the "information" from Singer themselves. I had, clearly erroneously, assumed that their lists online were simply a copy of what they had previously made available by phone in the US .

Graham Forsdyke of ISMACS has vetted this newly available info, so it should be somewhat more reliable than the older stuff. Of course there is some data that is not available at all due to lost records.
