Looking for info on Singer quantumlock 14T957 DC

As has been mentioned here, the latest issue of Threads has an article about sergers (overlockers) and I see they list this machine with a MSRP of $899. That strikes me as very reasonable - if it is not a typo! I've been looking for one on the Internet, but can't find it. Singer has no official dealer closer than 65 miles (on the other side of the Sierras.) I've tried to look at available sites for on-line authorized sellers, and none of them list it as available. So, I guess I would have to take a drive to find out if the dealers in California have it.

Meanwhile, I wondered if anyone has one, has tried one, or knows if the $899 MSRP is accurate. That's a heck of a lot of machine for that price! (I wonder if they dropped a "1".)

I have one and I absolutely LOVE it!

It sells here in the Atlantic provinces of Canada for about $1299 CND.

What would you like to know?

If you love it, that's what I wanted to know! I have an old Simplicity 3/4 thread without differential, that has really served me well, but I am thinking that I would like to have differential and a few more options. Plus with the exchange rate, the $899 may be right, in which case I would venture to say it's a good deal. All the others listed that include coverstitch are about $1,000.00 more. I think I just might break open the piggybank!

What all will it do? The one I have will do 3 and 4 thread overlock, flat lock and rolled hem. My fingers do the differential part. This one has the coverstitch, but what else? Chainstitch?

This one has it all as far as I'm concerned. Yes it has a chain stitch and a cover stitch which is it's biggest feature and one that a lot or people are going for these days. There are some models out there that come with just a two thread cover stitch, but this one has a THREE thread cover stitch. It's great stitch for hemming sweats, T's and making swimwear.

It's basically a 2/3/4/5 thread serger with differential feed, chain stitch and cover stitch. You can do a rolled hem where you don't have to change the plate, just a couple of adjustments and you're there! Same goes for doing the chain stitch. You can adjust your knife width with the turn of a knob. You can also thread each of your loopers with the flick of a lever. No more opening up under your serger to get at the lower loopers!

As for ease of use? I was amazed! If you're familiar with your 3/4 thread serger, then getting used to this one should be easy. You DO have another looper to contend with, but threading them and being able to distinguish which one does what isn't hard. When I first saw this serger, I though, "Holy cow, how is anyone going to remember how to do everything this does?" But I was very wrong. I got a workbook with mine and it taught me how to use it along with the manual.

I worked for a Singer dealer so that's how I knew about it and got to know it. It was also how how I knew I could attain the workbook. We've also brought these books in for our customers too. Since everything comes out of the US now, if you get a 14T957, you should be able to request a workbook for it if one isn't offered. It makes a big difference when you get used to using your serger. It tells you what settings and needle positions you need for each stitch that you're doing.

I hope that helps.... if you need to know anything else... let me know!

Good luck! Addie

Thank you so much! You should get a commission on this. ;-) I'm going to hunt one down, and ask for the workbook, too.

The saga continues. There is no local Singer dealer. They list 2 in California, one in Colorado who sell by Internet. I talked to a place in Pennsylvania reputed to have the lowest prices, and they do, but they don't ship Singers pursuant to their dealership agreement. If I could stroll on over..... Meanwhile, I heard from Colorado and got a price only $150 more than Pa. Oh, the fellow in Pa. offered me a Brother PL2100 at what seemed a good price. But Admiralla does not rave about the Brother, she likes her Singer.

My dear DH says to get what I want. woooohoooo! Of course, I didn't mention to him what these things cost. ;-)

Ideally, I would go try all of these, but the travel expenses would be prohibitive. Locally, there is no Singer dealer, other dealers exist, but at least two of them I would not do business with...and that about covers it these days!

DO NOT buy a Brother serger without reading the saga of the Brother serger... Do a google search of the group for Brother serger and see what turns up. You have been warned!

Thank you! That is just what I needed to know.

I am pursuing the possibility of the Quantumlock. The eCommerce dealer in Colorado tells me that she can't ship out of state due to Singer's policy on Quantumlock machines.

This puts me back to square one - but I can drive to California to a store over on the other side of the mountains....except that the closest dealer did not answer my email inquiry. Which makes me doubtful about trying to do business with them. I do have to go to San Jose this fall, and perhaps that is when I should shop.

Why does Singer give me a list of 3 eCommerce dealers when I click on the machine on their Singershop.com site, then not let the dealer ship the machine? Do they really want me to buy another brand?

Perhaps, it is because UPS, and other shipping companies will not insure sewing machines, computers etc any more. When I sent my niece a sewing machine and also DD a computer for her birthday, I wasn't able to add extra insurance for beakage. Emily
