Machine Recommendation - Sewing & Embroidery

Good morning. I'm a beginner with an older hand-me down machine. I'm planning to buy a machine and am considering whether to buy a sewing (only) machine or a sewing and embroidery machine. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance for input!

' Just my 2 cents: I would start with a regular sewing machine and save up for the embroidery machine. I have been sewing since I was around 8. I have had many machines (have 5 or 6 now). I just got an embroidery machine in Jan

  1. I absolutely love it but you have to use it alot to justify the cost (unless money is no object). Personally, I wanted a machine that did everything so I would not be frustrated by limitations after I learned to use it. I got the Designer SE by Viking. I have taken al the free classes they gave and joined the stores club where we learned different things about the machine. After 1 year, I still feel like I only know about half of what there is to know for that machine. Other than that, you should take a look at the FAQ for people wanting to invest in a sewing machine that I am sure Beverly or someone else will post here (I don't have it)

I agree with all Kirsten's advice. OP should also be sure she can afford all the threads, stabilizers and designs before investing in an embroidery machine. Also, and "older hand-me down machine" may be waaaaay better than a new one, depending on budget.

I just checked, Penny's "What Sewing Machine Should I Buy" FAQ is still there:
