Making bench cushions- need a bit of advice

Im making some bench cushions for a project. I have all the measurements, and will add in an inch for the seams to the width and height and length of my material.

What I dont understand is if Im making the cushion with 4 inches of foam, then the material will compress and Ill end up with wrinkles when someone is seated. I could overfill the cushions so that even at 4 inch height, they are under a bit of compression, OR I could cut down the height so when I push in a 4 inch thick piece of foam, it has to compress some. The fabric wont stretch much as its an outdoor heavy cotton fabric. I plan on spraying it with a stain guard.

Any suggestions?

many thanks, Greg

I would not change the 4" dimension much/at all, but for the length and width of each cushion, add about 5% to 6% to the *cut* size of the *foam*.

In other words, if you want finished cushion of say, 22" X 22" X

4", cut the top and bottom fabric 23.5" X 23.5", (I recommend allowing 3/4" seam allowances all around) and the box 5.5" X 89.5" (you'll probably have to cut this in shorter lengths and seam, so allow for those seam allowances as well). And that does not include self-welting, you'll have to add to the width if you are doing that.

And if you are including a zipper, you have to make two of each of the rear part of the box panels, doubling them over to make a zipper placket, make sure the zipper wraps *around* the back side of the cushion. For a 22" cushion the zipper length should be at least 28" or you risk breaking the zipper, when you stuff in the foam.

Then, have the foam cut to 23"(or 24") X 23"(or 24") X 4". That should be enough compression in the width and length to keep the fabric taut. There's also a trick of wrapping the foam in plastic when you stuff it into the finished covers. Maybe Cea will see this thread and provide directions.

Thank you! I hadnt thought about a zipper allowance (and pleats). I do appreciate your time and energy in answering.

You're welcome, but... "pleats"??? I didn't mention pleats in my response.

Sorry, Placket sounded a lot like pleat- for the zipper. I think its kind of like a reverse pleat- designed to stick out, not in.

But thank you very much!

Yes, if you do compress them, put something in the seam and use strong thread to reinforce the stitches, of the seams will pop. Sharon
