Making pullover neck smaller

Hi, all,

I made a polar fleece pullover for my husband. It took me forever to find a pattern that was close to what he wanted; all the ones I found seemed to have zippers. Very vexing. I ended up with Simplicity #

5782. Hubby wanted a mock turtke neck, but no where could I find one of those.

In order to get the chest the size my husband wanted, I had to go with the XL (he likes them bulky). It actually turned out very nice, but hubby feels the neck is too big. Personally, I hate having anything touch my neck, so I thought it was great, but it wasn't for me, unfortunately.

Question: If I make him another (Fabricville has a great sale on right now), does anyone have ideas on how to make the neck smaller? Would it work if I use a smaller neck band, or should I sew bigger seam allowances at the shoulder seam? Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Cynthia

I'm not sure that polar fleece has enough stretch to be able to make a mock turtle neck without a zipper.

Can he find the kind of collar he wants in RTW? If not, it may not be possible....

Whatever you do, try it out in scrap fabric first. You may find that you can't do a pullover with a fitted neck in standard polarfleece. In order to get the fit he wants, you may need to go to a stretch polarfleece.

Fleece is very stretchy so you can make a tight neck as long as the stretch goes up and down and not around. If you're using a border printed fleece this is impossible, sadly.

If it's not too tight It actually turned out very nice, but

For the next one, just alter the pattern, cutting the neckline higher to make it smaller.

Kwik sew should have a pattern that will work, for fleece.
