Marching band flags

Hi gang, Delurking because I'm curious about this - it was mentioned on RCTQ recently in a thread about current projects:

It's marching band season and time to make flags. Is anyone else bent over their machine fighting with slippery fabric? We've made 24-5'x8' flags already and have 48 more to go (3 different patterns/smaller sizes).

My other question is about technique - if you have a pieced flag, how do you join the pieces? We are using flat felled seams, but I have seen web pages that overlap the edges of fabric and zigzag over the join. Are these strong enough to hold up to the use they get?

Just Curious! Laurie in Oregon
