Just wanted to let everyone know that the Michigan State Fair Premium Book (that's the book with all the entry categories and prizes offered) is now available online at

It is a fabulous state- funded sewing and home crafts competition. Everyone in Michigan can enter - you don't have to be a previous county or local winner. If you don't live nearby ....just mail in your entry and it will be mailed back to you at the end of the fair.

The Michigan State Fair offers competition for Youths and Adults...in categories from Pillows, Dolls & Stuffed Animals, Doll Clothes, Dress - Up, Special Occasion / Prom, Sports & Leisure Clothes, School Wear, Outerwear, Machine Embroidered Items, Quilts, Fleece Craft, Creative Clothing, Coats & Jackets, Dress-up combinations, Costumes and Historic Reproductions.....something for everyone!! Don't miss the fun and excitement of displaying your creations for a chance to compete for ribbons, cash and prizes....and more importantly a chance to show visitors to the fair that some things are still handcrafted and not everything is mass produced and imported!! Share your talents and get inspired by others!

Most states sponsor their own State Fair. Most only cost a couple dollars to enter. Ours is even FREE for seniors! And, we give you (2) complimentary tickets to the Fair! Each fair has different dates and rules....but I encourage you all to please consider participating in your fair - it's a fabulous tradition!

Read all the rules and good luck to all of you who enter! Joy Hardie

I think all the states have great State Fairs....just Google and come across the pond! If you find yourself in Michigan you will have to help us...Paige and I will be living at the fair on cots keeping a close eye on all the pretty stuff! I think we had some great reports of good experiences from people that entered fairs last year. Don't you have them there? Joy

No, not in the same way. Don't forget that each of your states is as big as the whole of England! The local Kent Show in July runs for 3 days, but I've never seen a sewing competition there:

So do I! The photos show such a inviting, well lit display area. That must encourage quality entries.

I haven't been to the AL State Fair recently, but the building at the North AL fairgrounds where needlework is displayed is so crowded that quilts, for instance, are hung mostly one on top of another, with only a small portion of each one showing. It doesn't particularly make a person want to enter.

And I daresay that some, like California, where I live, are substantially larger.

Kate, rural crafts don't include sewing. It seems to me it should, even if there were specifications on the machine used, for instance, a treadle or hand driven. Emily

I guess the display options all depend on the area provided and the number of entries. Obviously....the Blue ribbon and Best of Show are going to probably get a better show spot. Each year it's different at our fair. Some years they hand them from the ceiling...sometimes on the walls...sometimes as backdrops to other displays. Last year I patted myself on the back for making the youth baked goods area look like an "old fashioned shop" .... even found a quilt with ice cream cones that I draped on a rod behind the counter to fit the theme. It wasn't with the other quilts....but I put stuff where it displays best. Then, a gal made a beautiful woo suit and it was on a wire mannequin....lead right into the sewing display.....with a few knit scarves and things in the "shop" too. Someone made a wax candle that looked like a lemon marange pie on a plate and I put that on the counter of the baked cabinet. At first glance visitors thought we had accidentally forgotten to put an item in the cabinet.

By the way....Exhibitor of the year this year in Michigan will win a bonus of $150 plus a plaque!!!...that's on top of their other prize and ribbon winnings.

England is roughly the size of Louisiana.

Kate, look at the list. Louisiana is only 31. Means there are 29 states SMALLER than England.

I forget if various territories are on the list...

Yes, but it does put England in perspective. A lot of folk tend to forget that we are the size of a single state. And some of out counties are smaller than your cities... Hell, some of our smaller counties are smaller than some of OUR cities! ;)
