My new toy!

I've been looking for a rotary cutter to go on sale, but haven't found any decent "steal" prices. I am really cheap.

The other day, at JoAnn's Fabric, there was a $25 model, in the clearance bin, for $1.00. It had been opened, put back in the package, and was clearly marked "Broken." But, the words on the package stated that the units come with a lifetime warranty, excepting the blades.

So I bought it, thinking I'd pop it into the mail and trade it for a brand new one. But the instructions for return mentioned they wanted a description of the problem, so I figured I better try it out first. And AFAIK, it works fine. I went out of my way to make it screw up.

Now, to find a broken mat... :)

I'm really excited - I can't wait to cut my next bit of fabric.

G'day Angela

Do you have a $2 shop in your area? A few months ago the one in my area had a self-healing cutting mat (A3 size) for Au$9.00.

I've had an Olfa mat (and cutter) for 25 years (since they were first produced) but recently bought a 25Yr Silver Anniversary 45mm cutter on eBay. They are the greatest item to have in your sewing kit, just make sure any guide/rule that you use is 3mm (or more) thick as I've used a normal school rule and find the blade will easily run up the rule and ouch!!! Not good to get so much blood on your sewing project. LOL

Congrats! That's truly a bargain, and you're in for a real treat when you begin using it regularly. You've probably heard the cautions many times: the blade is very sharp, so watch your fingers when you're cutting and close it after every cut. Don't roll into any pins...a pin will damage the blade and leave a spot that fails to cut a thread or two or three on every revolution...very aggravating!

Our local Hancock's often has mats on sale, at least 40% off. But before I'd go back to cutting everything with scissors, I'd spring for a mat at full price. Or two. Get the biggest one you can afford...it will pay for itself many times over in convenience.

I love my rotary cutter!

I've found that cutting mats are much cheaper at art supply shops than at sewing shops. I guess there are more poor starving artists than poor starving quilters :-)

TSWLTH is having the 24"x36" green mat (Olfa?) on sale for $19.99, reg $43.99. This is a great price for that size! The sale is starting on Sunday, I think. Or it's on sale for that price on Dec 10th only. (I got the flyer yesterday in the mail, but don't remember the details.) I can look for you when I get home to get the exacts....

Oh my - that is a good price. If you think about it, post it. I might have the flyer here somewhere. I think I'll even save this message.

Thanks to all you who posted hints about how not to lose fingers and such. I really know nothing about using them, and would not ever have considered buying one except you guys speak highly of them.

When JoAnn's has the sales with the 40% off coupons is a great time to pick up the blades, rulers, and mats. Even if they are already on sale they will accept the coupons. Makes for grrrrrreat savings!

I also save my old somewhat dull blades to use for cutting and trimming paper. I just use a permanent market and mark them "paper" as to not get it mixed up with the new razor sharp blades. They're quite easy to change, but do be careful of that wicked sharp edge.

OK. I've got the flyer in front of me...

The 19.99 price is for Dec. 4 - 16. The description is on page 17 of the flyer that I received...

Hope that helps!

Ok, let think about this for a second. Maybe I got that mixed up. But they will take the coupons for clearance items. I think you are probably right about coupons and the sale price. Hope I didn't confuse too many people.
