My ongoing coat saga

I'm still working on my coat. I warned you this might take forever but I'm not giving up. I started working with a redrawn pattern that I could sew together. All went well until I actually tried to make the adjustments I needed. The tape doesn't stick to gridded pellon pattern paper. Because I've run into a couple of annoying physical problems the project went on hold. The hand pain is relieved with the new scissors and rotary cutter. Then the evil monster struck again. I developed a nasty rash on Friday that made me nuts. Of course I couldn't see the doctor until yesterday because the rash started after office hours and wasn't enough to send me to the ER. The results are that I now have a sulfite allergy. That wrecks a bit of havoc in my life, and besides how can you sew when you itch like mad. Not one to say die, I handled the food problem with a lot of research. Good thing I love to cook. The pattern problem I think I've handled with with a product for Vogue Fabric stores called Bosal. It's a sewable pattern paper and interfacing. I order a 5 yd roll and it should be here next week. Just in time to take to the beach with me. No matter what that coat will get done. Now off to the oxymoron of cleaning the sewing room for the 2nd time this week. Juno

If you are in this much of a mood to clean a sewing room, would you like to visit SC for a free week of (hummm, humm) vacation? Barbara in SC who hopes to start in the sewing room tomorrow

And when you get done there, you could come here!!! Tell Bill to get in the car. :) Boy would we have a good time in the kitchen!!!

I'm so sorry you're having so darn much "fun." :(

That coat will be stunning when you get it finished. That's just all there is to it. :)

Juno, You can start in SC; then come to Houston for a while; then go to Sharon's to cook & sew. Bill is invited, too.

When the coat is finished it, you can wear it around the block on the first cool day and you'll be the "Star of the Block".

Bill cleans better than I do, so I'll let him do the cleaning and I'll cook. Juno

Yes, it's always the same; the annoying health issues occur only after doctor's office hours (DD LOVES to puke Friday nights, combined with a high fever, with both symptoms disappearing by Monday morning.) Really, I just did some research and found that the FDA banned sulphite from being used as a preservative for fruit and vegetables, but that it's still allowed in so many other products. Is that gaga or what? But didn't we all suspect that all those processed and pre-whatever foods are too good to be true? The older I get the more I'm convinced that nothing is free in life. Sigh!! But I do a lot of fresh cooking, too, and freeze my own stuff to save time. Doesn't look as tempting as the things from the industrial packs but at least I know what's inside.

The pattern problem I think I've handled with

I googled for that Bosal stuff but the net chucked out >> And when you get done there, you could come here!!! Tell Bill to get in >> the

Nah, don't be frustrated; I managed to finish the tunic today and will go parading in it tomorrow (when DH will have to take a pic of me). So: If I, with all the obstacles in my life, manage to finish something like that tunic, you will for sure be able to get your coat done in no time. A girl from my sewing class (well, she's a regular but off for studying in another city, and I met her once) is at a silk blouse for three years now, and she still hasn't given up. I'm certain that you will wear your coat this autumn already, an old hand like you!

Oh, and although I'm spoiling a humorous thread here, don't think that cleaning the sewing room is futile; when we are doing something like that, isn't it like scratching our head before giving an answer? We're gaining time; and while our hands put our surroundings in order, our mind sorts our thoughts and suddenly brilliant ideas manage to surface like the long-lost piece of fabric/book/pair of scissors/ [insert sewing item of your choice]. ;-)

That's the thing, you know whats inside. when you freeze your own food. It's all settling into place and that's all I really care about.

Oh Ursula, you are such a sweet heart. Congrats on your tunic. I'm thrilled for you. T he sewing room is sort of joke in this house. I got it moved down stairs a few years ago because I hated having to clean up every time I finished sewing for the day in the kitchen. Now that it's downstairs it much easier to ignore. Then I get the organization urge and go like made. Bill just laughs. I'm feeling much better today, Very little itching and my Bosal has been shipped. Here's the link.>

also comes in 10yards and they have other products by Bosal as well I have no idea how much international shipping is. In the past I've reshipped to France for someone. If you're interested it might be worth while looking into for cost.Juno

Maybe this:

I have some 'sewable pattern-making stuff' I don't remember where I got it. It's great for making a "muslin", then using the corrected pattern for the fashion fabric

Try staples?

Yay!!!

The sulfite agents added to some wines make me very uncomfortable, I get a flushed face and hot flashes. Sulfites of any kind give older DD severe migraines. I'm glad you were able to get the cause pinned down.

Indeed! I expect we would all be better off using fewer pre-prepared food items, but I do love the convenience...

When I was making DD's wedding gown I used a similar product. It's great, you can make all the marks and adjustment you want, then use the corrected final version as your pattern.

I can hardly wait to see it!

My sewing room has been truly tidy/clean only a few times in its long life. It is also the laundry room, so I used to try to keep a path cleared to the washer and dryer for DH. Fortunately, it's MY room, and it's in the basement, so no one else has to see it.

This is sounding like a better and better plan all the time!!

**ahem** AND.....since I have made this pattern before, you could bring it all with you and we could finish it up while you're here. :)

No, the angles are not always conducive to that kind of thing. Did consider it but gave up on the idea.

I've know for many years that I can't drink wine because of migraines. There are many other things that have bothered my without knowing why. Can't use shampoo, makes me itch some wicked, I wash my hair with my Cetaphil bar. works fine for me.

It isn't only convenience foods, it's almost every brand of breakfast cereal on the market, corn meal corn starch, baking pwd, just about anything thing in a jar, package, or bag. Bread is another thing. The sulfites are not always listed but there from the processing. Jello, pectin, all tomato products. Don't many of us make sauce from canned tomatoes? It has been an interesting and informative search for me. I figure I"ll get as much as I can now so I can be comfortable with what I eat. The very worst for me though is all candy has to go, especially chocolate. I love chocolate. A lot of medicines. I had a bottle of generic Tylenol, it's in the trash can. I've also emptied my food cupboard of all the things I know I can't have. Most of it can go to one of my girls since none of them have a problem, as of now. I hope it stays that way. I won't give any of it to my son, he has enough allergies as it is. I feel much better today. Prednisone is my drug of choice for another 10 days.

I'm looking forward to using the bosal. I really want this project to take shape. I just wish I could find a class to assist me with fitting. The local college has a Fashion Design program but doesn't offer anything to the general public. Not even able to audit a class.
