Need advice making a leather steering wheel cover

Can it be done on a home machine?

What type of leather to use, tips for sewing , what thread?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Use a proper leather needle.

G'day

Agree with AJH about using a leather needle but I'd also use poly upholstery thread, cotton will rot from exposure to sunlight after a while.

Steering wheel covers I've had in the past are lined with a thin foam, but this disintegrates too, so think I would try a layer of Magic Grip which is non-slip drawer liner, it should be thick enough to give some cushioning and will stop the cover sliding around the steering wheel as you turn corners etc.

The MG will slide easily through your machine so it might be best to try a walking foot (if you have one). Silicone spray is always good on the bed of the machine for grippy type fabrics but you wouldn't want to get this on the outer leather.....that would cause a dangerous situation when driving. Silicone should NOT be used on/near the steering wheel or pedals.

Sorry, I'm thinking as I type......instead of silicone on the bed of your machine, try a light sprinkle of talcum powder, this has a similar effect to silicone but can be brushed off when the project is finished.

That's what I'd do anyway.......maybe others have different suggestions. Let us know what you decide and how it turns out. Sounds like a fun project and I'd probably make one myself but my steering is already leather bound.
