need curtain help

Hi everyone,

I am an inexperienced sewer and need some help.

The fabric store down the street is going out of business and has a huge sale. I found some amazing material I would like to use to make curtains for my new condo (which is currently under construction). I have an idea of the kind of curtains I want to make--two panels, long, with 1" grommets (thanks for the postings on where to find them!) with a rod through them.

There are 2 windows which according to the architechs specs are 8 feet wide and 9 feet wide, respectively. The 9 foot wide window is actually a sliding glass door which opens on both sides. The exact window height I am not sure of, but the ceilings are 9ft tall and the windows are nearly floor to ceiling. I figure if I hang from a rod with grommets (or maybe hooks if I have to), I figure I'll be hanging them almost from the ceiling and I wouldn't mind if they puddle at the floor. Can someone tell me exactly how much fabric I will need to purchase? (I think the fabric is 54" wide) If you know anyone in the Montreal area who could do this project for me (as I don't have access to a sewing machine and as I said, I am an inexperienced sewer), I would appreciate the contact information.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Rosie

's very satisfying to make your own curtains. I have always loved doing them and the perk is when some asks where you got those beautiful curains you can say you DIY.Good luck. Juno

If you want an estimate, 38.5 - 40 yards. If you want an exact amount, I need more info. Exactly how long will they be when finished, and what kind of fabric is it. A fabric like a solid or a stripe or a very small pattern will use less fabric than something that needs to match as the widths of fabric are joined. You need to find the repeat, that means as you look along the edge of the fabric how far is it from the top of one flower (for example) to the top of the next exact same flower. They should be able to help you with this at the store. I can also explain to you how to calculate this yourself after you find the repeat and the exact finished length of the draperies. You will need 5 widths of fabric for the window (2 1/2 per panel) and 6 widths for the door (3 per panel). I'll be happy to figure it exactly if you can get the repeat and finished length.
