I got a package of 10 X 20" cotton knit cloth in different colors I would like to use for appliqués on DGD's clothes but I am at a loss as to what shapes to cut out! She is 11 and in 4th grade and a child's size 16 is getting small on her.. I'll be sewing up pj's and long pants & tops for school. Please help with suggestions! Thank you! Barbara in SC, soon to be in FL
When DD was in 4th grade, she would have liked spiky flowers in non-flower colors (raw edged -- petals and leaves just stitched down the middle), a partial argyle design (two or three diamonds with topstitched lines), etc. OTOH, other girls in her GS troop wanted purple skulls or pastel hearts or hot pink swirlys on black. And others who wanted nothing on their clothes at all.
Which is to say that we are unlikely to be much help unless you know something about her tastes. Well, if you want her to wear them to school, at any rate. She'll probably wear the PJs whatever they have on them.
Look at girl's/ junior clothing at Kohl's or Penney's or maybe even your local upscale retailer (Macy's, Von Maur, Elder Beerman, etc) and see what they're showing.
Thanks Jenn. I had been kinda thinking circles with different colored lines running through them, as maybe being the easiest & quickest thing to do. Or maybe hearts with wild stitching. I'm not even thinking about a shape with many sides. I've bought her RTW and she likes wild colors, or solid with a design on them. Thanks, you've given me some good ideas! Barbara
Does she like kitties? Horses? Dogs? Flowers? Fish? Hearts? Lady bugs? Dolphins? All of the above? Or, with Halloween coming up, maybe pumpkins or bats?
You can find wonderful shapes online and use WunderUnder to secure the shape before stitching.
I saw your question but couldn't quite wrap my head around doing appliqué with cotton knit. Knits stretch, curl, roll and stuff. I'm hoping you're going to iron the knit to a fusible that says "Okay. Everybody be still." Yes? Polly
I forgot to add, that is exactly how DGD finished the trim at the neckline on the dress she made for middle school promotion:

It's a fine poly knit, and she just cut random shapes of the black and stitched them by hand onto the neck band. That was spring 2010, DGD is ahead of the fashion curve. ;->
I had considered Wonder Under or something similar, and using a small appliqué with raw edges and stitching close to the edges----nothing like a quilt cotton design. Barbara
