Need help with measurements

I want to make a cover for a pet bed but I have no idea how to make the measurements or where to even start. I've never really done much sewing before. I can hem a pair of pants enough to get by but that's about it.

The pet bed I want to make the cover for looks something like this one

want the cover to completely cover the bed and I don't want it to fitsnugly, it should fit somewhat loosely. I'd also like it to fasten shutat the back near the bottom, preferably with velcro or at leastbuttons. I haven't decided on the fabric but I'd like it to be soft buteasy to work with.

How should I go about measuring the bed for the cover? What should I do after that? I have no idea what to do or where to start.

I have a dog bed exactly like that, but it fastens around the back side with a zipper, which I would recommend. You can do as one does for upholstering: use large sheets of paper, and shape them to the piece. Then use the pattern to cut your cover. One piece of advice: if your animal "digs" in his/her bed, *don't* use sherpa type fleece. It will not stand up to a determined dog, and you will have holes in the cover and fluff all over. Ask me how I know this....

If I were making one, I would use denim or twill and quilt it with a soft batting and muslin.
