Need T-shirt applique shape ideas

Hi folks-- The one niece is into manatees. "They're so cuuuute!" Huh.

Found some manatee-print cotton, and these are the best-lookin' manatees ever, in the opinion of someone who is not a manatee. They are pinky coral, swimming in a green-blue sea with blue vegetation, and there's some purple in there somewhere.

I want to attach a piece of this to a T-shirt (mana-T-shirt, har de har!) and have been playing with various piecing and strips and stripes. it finally dawned on me that I could make a fishbowl or fishtank shape, but what shape is that? Anyone been to the Wickki Wicci Water Ballet or Sea World or someplace else where these critters can be viewed in their habitat?

Also thought about making portholes, as if you were looking through the kid's chest out the windows of a sub, but the shape is problematic. (It would draw Unwanted Attention to A Certain Area. She's 12.)

The idea of a manatee-shaped cut-out with the fabric in it does not appeal.

Any ideas? TIA

Several years ago, for a family vacation to the Oregon coast, I made T-shirts in different colors for everyone in the family, with an "aquarium" theme. I sewed silvery ribbon to make a rectangle on the front of each shirt, and then cut bright tropical fish from some cotton fabric, and appliquéd them inside the aquarium. On each shirt, I had one "escaped" fish, which appeared to have jumped up and out of the tank. Don't know if that helps with your project, but it was great fun, and we all enjoyed wearing them at the beach.
