Needle bar screw for walking foot

Okay, let's see if you can help me with this. I bought a used Singer

20u. Bought a walking foot for it from a dealer. The problem is the screws holding the needle in place are way too short to work the walking foot. I've taken the machine back to the shop 3 times for a working screw, but to no avail. Last time I still had the assembly for the ruffler on it, and the tech said just take the wheel off and run the walking foot off the post. I can just see the damage this will do. Anyone know where I might find the proper screw/post to use? I have all these quilts just sitting here I could be running through this machine. I've searched the internet to no avail.

Thanks, Gail

Cea, There is a special needle clamp made for that machine to use attachments like the walking foot and buttonhole attachment. The threads on most sewing machine screws are not off the shelf stuff. and it seems a bit over the top to have something made special when it is readily available.

We are lucky to have you, who knows what he's talking about and what we're talking about and can come up with these needed parts.

When I had a treadle base missing one of the bolts, I could not get a replacement from a sewing shop, or even a hardware store. On a tip, I took a matching bolt from the other side to the auto parts store (not a chain, but one of the old types) and a gentleman working there went off and returned with the correct bolt - in shiny silver color, not black like those in the treadle base - but with the correct thread and length. I was very glad.

I'd done the hardware store bit (screws, gadgets, gizmos, dodads galore!!), searched the internet, and taken the machine to the shop twice for the part. They just kept putting short screws in it that couldn't work if their life depended. Hopefully, with Ron's help (thanks), I'll finally get what will work properly.
