New here

Hello to all members

I recently bought myself a sewing machine. This is a brave move for me, as every sewing machine I have ever had or used in the past, was possessed and hated me. I am not sure what I did to them, but every single one ended up with a mess in the bobbin area and huge thread knots in my material. It's been 20 years since my last encounter with a sewing machine. I really want to learn to sew. Hopefully with the updates made on sewing machines in the last 20 years, my new one wont be possessed. This time around I am going to make note of every single thing I do on it. This way if I run into this old enemy of mine in the bobbin, I can relate my problem to the sewing experts here, in hopes that you will be able to exorcise this sewing ghoul that haunts me.

Sincerely, HDAngel82

There are several things that can cause those problems with sewing. One of the most important things is to make certain the machine is threaded correctly, feeding through the tension, second is ascertain the needle and thread are the right size for the fabric, and the needle is inserted properly, it is so easy to put them in backwards, and the third is the tension itself. I'll suggest you read your manual from beginning to end a couple times and familiarize yourself with all the parts of the machine before trying to sew on it, then insert the needle and thread the machine following the manual's directions exactly. Now sew a few stitches and see how it works. I have been sewing for over 60 years and have taught many people to follow these same steps when beginning. Your manual is very important and should always be nearby when sewing. Another idea is once you get one fabric sewn the way it should, make a note of the tension, needle size, thread weight, etc. and keep a record to which you can refer when needed. Just go slowly and you'll be successful. Keep us updated! Good luck! Emily

Sandra Betzinas book Fabric Savvy is extremely helpful for a beginner. Lots of fabrics covered with the proper foot, thread and needle for each one

Welcome to one of the best sewing groups on the net! You have reached the right place for those snarly tangles to be un-knotted (usually an upper tension problem!).

Keeping a diary is an excellent idea! You are brave to start again, but do not worry - we're here to hold your hand! :)
