New technique, new happiness

Funny how doing something a new way changes the way I feel about sewing.

An online tutorial for a gypsy skirt, the current name for tiered skirts, had a better ratio than the ones in my vintage sewing books. I love it : hip measurement +4 inches, than add 20 inches for each successive tier. All tiers are 9 inches wide.

It was so easy and satisfying that I decided not to make a casing for the elastic and thread it through, but to butt the edges of the elastic together, fold the fabric over it, and stitch.

Oh yes! Gone are the days of tugging elastic through casings.

Been doing elastic that way for years. Just butte the elastic together, divide into 4ths. Divide the skirt or slacks the same way so the elastic gathers will be even. This makes for nice looking shorts, pants, or skirt.. Barbara in SC and now FL

Barbara, I am notoriiously slow to embrace new techniques. IBefore this, i only used it on lingerie -- lots and lots of lingerie.

A friend, who sewed at a manufacturing plant, showed me this technique about

20 years ago and I have used it since. Sure makes for neater looking clothing. I've even tried it for panties, but decided that underwear took too long to sew. Maybe it's just me! Barbara in FL

For some reason when I do this, the elastic "grows" so it no longer fits when finished. I udes to use this technique alot but had to stop after several (miserable) experiences unpicking all those rows of elastic. What am I doing wrong?
