New to Quilting

Hi I would like to learn to quilt. Can anyone tell me what supplies I would need to get started? Is there a good book out there for people just getting started? I have a basic sewing machine. Is this good to start or will I need to purchase a better one? Any advise I could get would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi GaitedLady,

A basic sewing machine is just fine. You also need fabric (100% cotton is the usual stuff) and something to cut with. You can do with scissors, but if you can justify spending on a cutting mat (18" x 12" at least if possible), a rotary cutter and a ruler (4" or 6" by at least

14") you will find you can cut faster and more easily.

I highly recommend you find the rec.crafts.textiles.quilting newsgroup and ask the same question there. Also which country are you in? I am guessing the US from your email address, but that information will affect which shops are recommended for you - my favourite UK ones won't be very convenient!

Lizzy is right. Find a way to post at rec.crafts.textiles.quilting. There are about 200 frequent posters there and about 2,000 more who drop in if the notion strikes them. They will be delighted to welcome you and get you going. Polly
