New to sewing- need advice!

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to sewing (and this list) and need some good advice. I plan on sewing mostly leotards and dance-type wear. Most of the fabrics I anticipate using are almost all *stretch* fabrics such as lycras, stretch velvets, and some chiffon type fabric as well.

Before I put a lot of money into a sewing machine I need to know what type of machine would be best for these specific stretch types of fabrics. I was also wondering if a serger might be more appropriate than a regular sewing machine. However, I don't really know the difference between a serger and a sewing machine. I'd like to stay in the price range of $250 -$800 if possible unless there is a great machine that is really worth paying more.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks! Dee :)

DKiely33 spray painted on a boxcar:

  1. please read the "what machine should I buy FAQ" posted here this morning
2 for dance wear you WILL want a serger in a addition to a regular machine.

Sergers stitches specifically for stretch fabrics that finish, and trim in addtion to providing the best seam for stretch. While you can use an assortment of stitches that are found on regular machine to get the job done, a serger is the first choice and will give professional looking results with a little practive. I'm sure some one else can elaborate more
