Humm, interesting. Your ancestor was well established in the city when my Cantrell ancestor left Northumberland, England and arrived in Philadelphia in 1695. Our ancestors would have been neighbors, then, as my Cantrell ancestor also settled in the town and built a brickyard. There is a Cantrell Street near the river front, but I have yet to visit it. Richard Cantrell came here following two uncles to these shores. The uncles however came to Virginia and the No. Carolina area, much warmer climes. I suspect that was the factor which attracted Richard's grandson to North Carolina, and soon everyone else followed him south. Although there are books about the family lines through the imterim, they were written long afterward, and offer no rationale for the migration. Whereas your family came for religious freedom, my own seems to have come for economic reasons. You are fortunate. Other than the family genealogy, little else is known about my family, up until the time of my grandparents. When I moved here with my Pennsy-native husband, I was delighted to have practically completed a loop.

Wow! Amazing that they lived on through the centuries even as Roman catholicism was advancing into Europe. Do you know what routes they took into Germany? Are there any writings that survived?

Heh. Kids could usually care less as it just doesn't seem relevant, but the seeds were planted.

Maybe I should have renamed the thread. Sharon
