nightgowns

Well, I finally got some pictures of the nightgowns!!!

The original is over 18 years old now and falling apart. The only thing I didn't like about it was how short the yoke on the bodice is and how long the button placket is. (You'll see.) So I changed that up on the new ones. I did use a pattern........sorta. View A of Butterick B5544.

On the one with the fancy, embroidered eyelet from fabric.com, I should have used smaller buttons. They are shell buttons from my collection of those. But they are just too big. Might change them out and hand overcast the button holes smaller eventually. We'll see. ;) On the regular eyelet one, I used much smaller shell buttons. I also chose not to line the bodice. I did not do a facing or lining at all at the CF. I lapped the scalloped edge of the eyelet and used the scallops to figure where the buttons and buttonholes needed to go. (every other scallop.) Worked really well.

They are both SO comfy!! They get softer each time I wash them. (cotton lawn) I hope they both last as long as the first one. :)

I have more white lawn, and I have more eyelet.......there could be more. I may never get dressed again. lol Seriously, I do find myself getting a quick shower and throwing on my nightie by about 8:00 here lately. They are that comfy. And it has been at or above 100 degrees for the last 10 days. Yeah. Cool and comfy is the way to go. We got rain last night and today!!! Today we didn't even get above 80 degrees till about 4:00 this afternoon. It was WONDERFUL. (the day before, y'know, when I was out hoeing the garden.....it was 96 by 10:00 AM.)

Sharon, that is so pretty. You could wear it for a summer dress. Oh, but then you would have to put a slip under it and that would make you warm on those Arkansas heat waves.

How very lovely. And yes. For no particular reason, I'd close the buttonholes just a little and change the buttons. I'd have to think a while or audition to see whether the buttons needed to disappear or be an embellishment but the gowns are so exquisite I reckon I'd have to go that one more step. Thank you for sharing. I love your creations. Polly

Really pretty! Nice and airy and cool looking for your current heat wave. I love both eyelet fabrics, and I agree that the buttons on the first one should be swapped out for teeny tiny clear glass or "pearl" ones. I have some tiny (3/16") faceted glass ball buttons in my stash (from my mother's stash), they would be perfect. Or how about these:

aren't going to be unbuttoning them anyway, right? :->

Now when are you going to make the matching robe and slippers? We all know you just lay about eating bonbons and pursuing fashion magazines...

They are just lovely. I'd be very pleased if I'd made them. And I do agree with you about the buttons - a bit of a pain to go the extra step, but I'm sure they'll irritate you till you do them.

Yes, the nightgowns are so lovely! But perhaps it might help if you sewed on the buttons with parallel stitches instead of crosswise ones. Of course, smaller buttons are always another option.

BTW, I found this fabric, but of course that was long after your search for the right stuff. And it's really not cheap since it's organic all the way. I just thought you'd like a look at it...

Mind you, I felt slightly tempted after I saw your lovely nightgowns, but another look at the price cured me instantly. And I still have the cotton/kapok mix to make nighties out of. In another life, then. ;-)

Lovely stuff and probably worth $127.32/meter. But more likely to be used for bridal or christening gowns than for curtains.

Well, I think we were talking stuff like that in this thread. Make a bridal nightgown of it? For those who want to have a kind of traditional wedding night, perhaps. ;-)

Thank you very much. :) They are sooo cool and comfy. And it has been so stinking hot!!!

I think they will be smaller shell buttons, and flat. If I put raised ones on there, they will poke me. I really do sleep in them....and lounge in them........haven't worn one to walmart yet, but it has been tempting. LOL

Well, no....not I.... lol

It's SO true!!!! You know me so well!!! LOL Although the slippers interfere with my pedicure time.

Today while I was lazing about, I canned 11 pint jars of sweet pickles (Yes, your DMIL's kind.) Made and canned a batch of peach jam. Picked a 3 gallon bucket worth of cucumbers, tomatillos, bell peppers, chili peppers, blackberries (they go in a plastic tumbler inside the bucket) tomatoes, and eggplants. Did 2 loads of laundry. Now I'm waiting for the rest of the chocolate chip cookies to be done baking. My niece is attending a horse show in Tulsa, which is about 90 minutes from me. She has the day off tomorrow and so does DD. So the kids and I are going to go see her and take her cookies. :)

When the cookies are cooled and can be put away, I'm falling over in a heap. :) Sharon

Have you been peeking in my closet? A few years ago, I discovered Vermont Country Store and their offerings of "muumuus" and "patio dresses." Lovely fabrics, lots of cool cottons, woven and sewn in India. They've become my "uniform." Casual and comfortable enough for lounging around (playing on the computer), doing any necessary cooking/laundry, etc., and yet quite acceptable for pushing a cart around the local grocery store. I walked in the grocery yesterday and was immediately complimented on my "beautiful dress." By a man! I ordered two more last night. LOL!!

Thanks for the hint of where to buy the 'patio' dresses, also my favorite outfits; I'd forgotten about that store.

Today in the Houston Chronicle is an article on 'Caftans'. The one on the front is so pretty, I'd like to have one like it. Emily

Happy to help!! I'm completely sold on comfort, and these loose cotton dresses are perfect for our climate. During winter, I wear essentially the same styles, but in denim or twill weight. Some flannel, too. I look at fashion only to giggle.....but come to think of it, I've never been much interested in what's in vogue -- that's one of the reasons I sewed so much.

There's a code for free shipping at VMS, good until 7/15. If you need it, give me a holler. I notice that the free shipping codes can often be found through a google search, too. Search "coupons."
