no zip box cushions

My first post, so a big hello to everyone.

I'm hoping that someone can help suggest the best way to make box cushions without using zips (zippers). We've just made a sofa unit out of cement and I can't find zips that are large enough to cover the foam to cushion them. I've had a practice run joining two 70 cm zips together and they are coming up way too short. I live in a very rural part of southern Italy so finding larger zips is not an option.

I'm debating whether I should use velcro or ties as an alternative to zips. All suggestions gratefully received.

Ciao ciao for now

How about making the base of the cushion from two pieces with a generous overlap - each piece should cover 2/3 of the base and overlap. Then you should be able (with some pushing and shoving) get your cushion in through the overlapped opening. No zips, no velcro, no ties (unless you want to)

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,

I was all set to suggest you go to your nearest JoAnn's where I saw a poster advertising custom made to your request zippers. ...........Then I saw the Italy part of your message.

Making them with a significant overlap of fabric is one idea. Buttons or stronger velcro are two more. Large hooks and eyes. I was just thinking though you might have to reinforce the area with some stiffer interfacing to absorb the stresses imposed on the fabric to which your connectors are attached.

Oh well, just my two cents, AK in PA

Firstoff, I must see the photos of the concrete sofa. Velcro sounds like a pretty good option - its not like there is going to a great deal of force trying to open the cushion, right?

An alternative would be to hand-stitch the edges together, using upholstery thread. Cushions were probably made long before zippers or Velcro were invented, and I imagine that's how they were finished. ;-)

Or you might send these folks an e-mail asking about international shipping:

your hooks and eyes got me thinking - this is a CEMENT couch. Some sort of industrial type fastener that showed would be really cool. A big grommet with one of those toggles that you see on kids jackets? Or maybe some sort of metal toggle. Hm.

Are there any sports car places within an hours drive that might make tonneau covers for sports cars? Tonneau covers for sports cars usually feature a very long zip right down the middle so that the driver can just sit behind the wheel and still have the tonneau covering the passengers side. The zips on these covers would work for lounge cushions.

The zipper on my tonneau cover is very heavy duty -- especially thick and large. Maybe 5 to 10 times larger than an apparel zipper. I think it would look really out of place on a lounge cushion.

But its a concrete lounge. Its already breaking rules!!

But an apparele zip isn't the sort of zip that would be used to hold a big cushion inside a chushion either. And it does depend on a few other things as well. It could look out of place if A) it was visible (but cushion sips are usually not visible), B) a heavy grade of fabric was chosen and C) as the this is a concrete lounge, and thus a very substantial thing with what sounds like a very big cushion, it should do the job quite well.

First of all...Welcome to Contadina!! Glad you could join our group!

i think the grommets and some lacing would be very cool looking. I would of course use this as a decoration and use the overlap method mentioned above for the actual cover. Boating canvas is very durable, comes in loads of colors and is very sturdy. It should go with your concrete! amy in CNY

:Morning all and thanks for the very prompt responses. I've decide to usevelcro for now (unfortunately we have family visiting so timing is anissue) but I'll retrofit zips if this proves to be too flimsy. I'm on cushion number two, with only one remaining and they are lookinggood. Hubby has still to sand the lime render and paint it all white. Onceit's all completed I'll post a picture up. Thanks again for your help.
