nursing gowns

Does anyone have any ideas how best to convert a regular pattern to a nursing one? I have some ideas, but would like some input if anyone has done this.

I was thinking of a t-shirt pattern, extending it to gown length, having an overlay on top OR making the top layer over lap so you only have to lift one side at a time.

Thanks for your input. Sandy

Hi Sandy,

There was a link posted the other week about this..... hmm... rummages in bookmarks folder ........ here we go!

from some nightdresses, I have not bothered with nursing specifc clothing, and I suppose if I had chosen pajamas, or button front night shirts, I wouldn't have needed nursing specific nightdresses. I used my standard T-shirt pattern, lengthen at the bottom, and slashed the centre front down to a couple of inches below the bra line, and added a placket front.

You could look up the thread from the other week as there may be some other useful comments there.

If you want any more help on dressing whilst breast feeding or on breastfeeding just yell (quickly as I'm off-line for 8 days from Saturday). I'm on baby #1, and the breast feeding did not happen as simply as I supposed it would do in my pre-baby days! We got our problems sorted out and we're still happily breast feeding 6+ months later. It's been an education learning about breast feeding.

I'm getting ready to have baby #2, and with baby #1 I never used anything special beyond a nursing bra. Regular old t-shirts were my main stay...nothing altered or specially purchased. I plan on doing the same with baby #2!

Thanks Sarah! The sight is great and it gave me a great idea to make a gown. The one I chose was the horizontal opening secured by snap tape. This will be quite simple to make from scratch.

I am hoping to successfully breastfeed this one. My first child was born premature and never took to sucking. I still pumped every three hours so he would at least get the benefits of breastmilk. Sandy
