Oh! My!

DGD's Halloween witch costume...

Well I was thinking, you know long black robe, maybe a short cape, black "costume" (read *cheep* satin) ) and we're good to go, right? Something like:

Right. No problemo! Here is what DGD had in her very determined 11-year-old mind:

panne velvet for the front and sleeve insets, black sheer "Halloween" fabric with sparkly black spider webs all over, and purple sequins scattered about. Lining for the black is a lighter purple Posh, very lovely effect. Black satin cording for the lacing. No stand-up collar, thankyewverymuch Grandma! We purchased the fabric and pattern (had to go to four different TSWLTHs for enough of the black sheer), went out to dinner, came home and cut out the pattern, had a pin fitting, all is well. So had a session on pattern layout, she cut out the panne for the front panel and sleeve facings. Had to quit at that point and take her home, tomorrow is a school day. I have to admit it, this should *really* be fun! I made her mother some fantastic costumes for plays and Halloween when she was little, but nothing quite like this.

I'm seriously thinking about going back and getting enough of the purple panne (it was very cheap) and some black satin to make this cloak:

Yeah, well that part would not have been necessary, as I still have "witch" hat in the costume box from when my DDs were young.

> That rocks! Yay! for DGD's taste! ;) Oh, I agree! We poked around on the computer at the pattern sites before starting out, and that was one of two she settled on. I think its going to be great fun, and will look terrific on her.

I may make it up anyway, we have plenty of fabric. She could always use it or not. The kids are permitted to wear their costumes for the last part of the school day on the 31st, I'm a little concerned about those sleeves. I suggested we make the cuffs detachable (with Velcro) but she wasn't having any of it.

I like that one better, too. That whole ruffled hood on the second one is over the top!

> Hmmm... Does she have a fancy dress party to go to? Not strictly speaking a "fancy dress party", but we go to the Nutcracker every-other-year, and this will be the year again. All the kids (and adults) come dressed to the nines, it's fabulous! And we also have a very nice Christmas Eve tradition of everyone being well-dressed and on their best behavior. She would have several opportunities to wear it. So, like I said, "We'll see..."

Well, if you DO make it for her, I hope it's hip deep in snow where you are, or the poor thing will be as roasted as the turkey! ;) The dressy events sound like fun.

Not something to dress up for, but I'm trying to persuade James to come to the ballet with me. I know Alan won't, but James might come to either the Nutcracker or Wind in the Willows at The Royal Opera House. And I want to go to the RSC at Stratford next May to see Sir Ian McKellern in King Lear... Some friends went up on Saturday and saw Patric Stewart in Anthony & Cleopatra. I wish I'd known in time to go with them!

Oh, I'd LOVE to make costumes for some of those... I might get back into the costume stuff when James starts getting into productions at school. :)

Yep. that sounds about right. I knew I had done that one for DD. Looked back through pictures and here it is:

's in the Halloween '03 gallery, and she was 11 at the time. lol Exceptthe Queen was not a witch, she was a vampire. ;)

There was no getting DD to wear that collar either. And I couldn't come up with a way to get it made, and fastened and still comfortable. We could have had comfortable, but floppy; or standing at attention, and digging into the throat. So we did without.

I weighted the points of the sleeves with big heavy beads. I did some beading all the way around the edge of that cuff. You can sorta see it on the black. Then the beads I put on the point were these big clear, "crystals" that hung down. You can almost see it in the picture. lol That helped keep the sleeves from flopping around too bad. And when she would move her arms up, the sleeves would fall down out of the way. (if you could just see my hands "talking" I know this would make perfect sense. lol)

The bad part is I loaned out both that hat and dress to a friend. Never gotten them back. :( Ah well... I'd like to do another witch's hat with the battery operated twinkle lights. Wouldn't that be fun!?!?? We don't have nearly the Halloween celebration around here that we did in IN. There, we were the only subdivision for MILES with sidewalks all the way around. So we would actually have to have the sheriff's dept. come out and block off the entrance, making people park outside the neighborhood. Otherwise we couldn't get in and out on trick or treat night. Not unusual at all to have

600+ kids. Here there's about 5. lol So I think it's time to start having Halloween parties at our house. :) Costumes mandatory of course. ;)

Oh, Sharon, that's just such a funny coincydink! Although, I suppose the limited number of "costume" patterns makes it inevitable that some of us will duplicate. I love her costume and her makeup!

Thanks for the input, I won't bother with it.

Great idea! I'm sure DGD will just *adore* some nice jet beading. Did you " 'glue' the trim over the princess seams"??? Aaarrgghh! Nasty instructions. "Hem the front and back neck edge" Nope, not me, I'm planning on drafting facings....

And

I understand perfectly, I "talk hands", too! I was thinking about tacking the front edge of the cuff up like it shows in the illustration, or maybe securing it with a tiny black snap. I don't see anything in the instructions for that, just my thought.

Another one! I wonder how many more in this newsgroup alone? ;-}

I am leaning strongly in that direction. It would be purple panne velvet with a black satin lining. Since it is often cold and raining here on the 31st, I figure she would appreciate the extra warmth. And the panne is washable so will the satin be.

White Christmas is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I've made certain all the DGC had a copy by the time they were 5-6. Emily .

Our favorite, too, which is why DGD is longing for a dress like those. And they are very pretty.... ;-)

Gosh, Kate, I would LOVE to go with you to see any and/or all of the above!!! Only fair to warn you, though, that I believe any occasion worth dressing for is worth *overdressing* for! :-)

I had a job interview in Bor=E5s (half an hours bus ride from my little town) and go so worked up over not having a suitable jacket to wear with my interview outfit that I was forced, FORCED I TELL YOU!, to go to Lindex and buy a new jacket!!! It's really cute, too, chocolate brown no-wale cord in a fitted blazer style. :-)

Erin (waiting impatiently to hear back about the job!)

Hehehehe... You should see Big Sis all togged up for her trips to Glyndebourne!

Job fingers all crossed for you - though I cannot for the life of me think why you didn't MAKE that jacket! ;)

Gosh, yes, I decided I needed a new jacket at about 11.00 am and my job interview wasn't until 3 pm! :-)

After spending the equivalent of $50 on a jacket, I couldn't in all conscience go by my favorite fabric shop in Bor=E5s. I did, however, go by the tea shop that makes my favorite blends. I bought 2 new blends that each smell delicious! I made one type this morning and have the other in the "magic tea" brewing as I type.=20

I once got home from town at 6pm, and was at the party at 9pm, having made the dress, showered and washed my hair, put on full war paint, and had a meal! I just LOVE panne velvet... No seam finishing needed!

I have some tea that costs £12 a quarter pound. It ought to be served in solid gold cups at that price! It isn't quite as wonderful as it should be for the price, either...
