OT - cane seats question

Believe it or not, someone on another newsgroup suggested that there are those here, possibly including Susan, who might be able to answer my question. So, if not, just please point me in a better direction and I'll keep looking.

I make woven cane seats/seat backs. I have recently learned that there is a real call for people doing it in this area, that there are few who do this craft hereabouts. I have also been given the name of someone who runs a shop who is looking for someone to do woven cane. But, I have no idea what the going rate is in this area. Many years ago in the Berkshires it was thirty five cents a hole, but it probably has increased since then. So, would anyone have any idea what the going rate for a *woven* caned seat for a chair would be in the US and, preferably, in Florida?

TIA.

The last time I checked it was $1.25 a hole and that was eight years ago. I did it myself. There are adult ed classes that teach how to do it. It takes time but can be very rewarding. A kit costs about $30.00. I did a childs rocker and it had over 200 holes. Did the math, took the class and did the chair. JJ "just me" keep looking.

My dad canes chairs for about 5 or 6 refinishing shops in Indianapolis. His rates vary according to what he's doing. Normal, seven strand hand woven is (IIRC, it's been a couple years since I saw one of Dad's 'menus.') is right about $1 per hole. Blind caning is $1.50 per hole. Rush and splint seats he figures based on the area of the seat (width times length.) I know that's a per inch figure, but can't remember what it is.

Dad has almost more business than he can handle. I've been trying to get him to raise his prices for over a year. So I'd say, start out around $1 per hole. And see where you get from there. If you have more than you can handle, bump your prices up. That way, you will still have clients, but you won't be overwhelmed, and you will still make the money you need to make for it to be worth your time.

is who Dad orders supplies from. He's foundthem to have the best quality for the best price. They also do canerepairs. You might want to email them and ask what their going rate is.Really nice folks. I've ordered from them before. They know who I am (thruDad) and always take time to chat. :) HTH
