[OT] $#%^@$ hardware

I spent something on the order of 4 hours tonight installing the drivers, installing a new Wireless-G PCI adapter in my older computer, rebooting about a dozen times, uninstalling everything, holding my tongue just right, trying it again, and again, and again.... Finally called tech support, she walked me through everything I had already tried another five times.

It's Dead, Jim.

She gave me a link to Return Merchandise Authorization number and they will replace the unit.

Just to keep it a little "On Topic", I am hoping to get my older Gateway up and working with the embroidery machine. The Gateway has a native serial port for the dongle connection (I've been using a USB adapter on my notebook), so maybe I won't have to close the PSW digitizing software and open the "Conversion" software every time I want to send a design to the XL5000.

I'd really like to have the computer connect to my wireless LAN, so I can transfer a bunch of files I have downloaded on my new Dell computer. I know I could burn them all to a CD, but if I can't' get the LAN working, I won't have an internet connection on the old computer. Not fatal, but inconvenient.

Oh, we've all been there!

Poking out of the corner of the mouth in a gesture of intense concentration?

She? I thought it was axiomatic that all tech suppoirt bods are spotty 17 year lads!

Alright, I know it's more money, but I went with Network Magic. Makes setting up a home network a doddle.

Indeed, and this is certainly not my first time!

Exactly!

Oh, dear! Richard, here I have been upholding the honor of men on this newsgroup and you go and spoil it. ;-P

As it happens, this was very likely a youngish woman in one of the sub-continent countries. Her "English" was just about understandable. Not that I am fluent in any language other than my mother tongue, however I don't try to explain complicated procedures to Bangladeshis....

I'll look in to it later, right now my internet connections is very sluggish, nothing is loading.. However, setting the network up is usually not a problem.

The PCI card was a LinkSys (now Cisco). I usually have no difficulty setting up my network, I just have to have cards which actually come to life and communicate with the others.
