OT - Hummingbirds, burned pan

After months of seldom seeing these little jewels, still using the

8 oz. early-season bottle in the feeder and its lasting several days (stealth birds), yesterday I saw 7 swarming the feeder, and an empty bottle at day's end! One looked like a Ruby Throat, which I've never seen here before.

Such a blessing! Changing to quart bottle next filling. I'd been worried by so few showing this year.

And thank you for the suggested remedies for my pan. After several days' soaking with little progress, I scraped the coke-like coating with a putty knife, and went at it with a cup-shaped wire-brush wheel on a disc-sander, followed by a good scrubbing with a Scotchbrite pad. Almost new-looking.

Hiding in my techie-stash is a carton of chemical-laboratory-grade Calgonite - a boiling with that might have broken the bond.

Now "cure" the pan. Either cook something greasy in it (carefully so as not to burn) or wipe it with a vegetable shortening, and put it on a very, very, very low burner for about 30 minutes - again, don't burn it.

We routinely do this with our cast-iron pans, but even stainless steel can benefit from a tiny bit of grease in the pores.

Perhaps you can answer this question for me - what to do with a DH who puts the cast iron skillet in the dishwasher?

That is truly a dilemma. You actually have a DH who knows how to open the dishwasher? And put things inside it??? Run it, even?

Did I mention the time one of my step-daughters decided to make some candy for herself and my son? So she put some baking chocolate, sugar, and I-don't-know-what-else into a Revereware saucepan and put it in the microwave.

You are indeed a wise woman. It is truly a matter of what lies beneath.
