OT: Migraines

Please somebody tell me if there is a magic cure for recurring migraines, I have had this one for a week everymorning and every night. I think its related to menstruation. I can't sleep, work, play.....it hurts so much all I can do is walk around mindlessly and sometimes I can only cry. I just feel it on one side of my head and the vein in my temple is just pounding so hard you can feel it. I always take Advil liquid gel for headaches, but they don't help at all.

I am off to the doctor in one hour.

It felt good to tell someone it hurts.

Thanks, Michelle Giordano

Going to the doctor was going to be my suggestion. Hoping he/she can prescribe something for your pain. I've never suffered from those type headaches but you certainly have my sympathy. Isn't there a new drug out on the market supposedly for migraine sufferers?? Let us know how you're doing.

The one time I thought I was having a migraine, it turned out to be a sinus infection and inner ear infection, so let your doctor check you out. If it is migraine, there are some new treatments that reportedly work well. Good luck.

I went to see my doctor and he gave me a whole bunch of anti-inflamatories, also he is going to see me on monday about long term treatment for these migraines, because I have had them for years, but this time it was way worse than ever. They progressivley get worse over the years for me.

Thanks for listening,

Hi Michelle,

Sorry to hear about your migraines. I get them too, and they are a PITA. Mine are sometimes PMS-related, other times stress causes them, especially travel out of town [when its not just a relaxing holiday]. Changes in barometric pressure [caused by Chinook winds] usually result in a tension headache [Tylenol Sinus works well] rather than a migraine. Sounds like your migraines are reoccurring or perhaps clustered.

What works for me is to not travel too much, or over-commit myself [with jobs & responsibilities]. The doctor gave me a prescription for Imitrex by nasal spray, and it works very well.

You have my sympathy. Hopefully, you're on the road to getting them treated.

Hi Michelle, I was suffering terribly with migraines....often disabled like yourself a week at a time. I thought it had something to do with sinuses and was medicating with Sudafed & Asprin to no avail. Amazingly, low doses of Topomax, a drug used to prevent seizures, is "the latest craze" for preventing migraines. Another girlfriend who went to a migrain clinic is also sucessfully on the stuff. My headaches are now few and far between. Sometimes my eyeballs feel dry though. Weightloss (another possible side effect) has to be monitored (now isn't that a shame). So, see a neurologist and get a battery of tests to make sure nothing goofy is going on in there and then hopefully he/she can find something that works for you. It's a heck of a lot better than suffering! I feel for you. Joy

Boy can I relate. Go to the doctor and get some migraine meds. It took me trying three different ones to finally hit on the one drug that works. Thank goodness for it.

That sounds interesting, but is weightloss a guaranteed thing, or just possible.........I don't want to lose weight, I weigh less than I did before babies (117lbs) so I can't afford to lose any...... although getting some muscles in the "abdominal flab region" would be nice.......

I took some medication and feel a bit better, I have a small headache.......but its really hot here and I have kids........so thats normal lol.

Thanks,

I live in Saskatoon, so we don't get the chinooks.....just the heat or cold......next time we go to calgary I want to check out some fabric stores though, we are supposed to be going "sometime". We usually get to edmonton quite often because we have more relatives there.

Thanks for the sympathy

I had migraines for many years associated with my period. I took BC pills to control my cycle; three to five days after finishing a course, MIGRAINE. I was treated with Imitrex injections. My Gyn doctor changed me to 90-day cycles and an estrogen patch during the week off. This did prevent migraines.

The good news is that I don't have them now that I am post-menopausal.

I get what I've been told is a painless form of migraine, shimmery distortion in the edge of my visual field (resembles heat waves on a highway), slight dizziness, problem with mental acuity and focus. Taking some electrolyte salts will clear it up in about 15 minutes. I don't know which salt actually does the job, but I've gotten results from each of these: Solaray Magnesium and Potassium Asporotates (tm) with Bromelain Twinlab CellMins(r) Calcium, Magnesium, & Potassium generic Calcium, Magnesium, & Zinc, and a Potassium pill a couple of Oscar Meyer hot dogs (not very effective) a banana or 2.

I mention this, wondering if a real migraine might respond to this real cheap and (I think) safe remedy, and in the off chance someone knows which of those electrolyte salts is the fixer.

Don't wish yourself there too soon girl - although there are some bleedin' advantages! HRT is my friend.

In the meantime, for the migraines, get your GP to look seriously at both magnesium and vitamin B complex supplements (the latter also deal with period cramps). Ask about Mefanamic Acid also, but a) I think this may only help with cramps and b) if you've been taking heavy doses of painkillers like codeine and ibuprofen over some yrs is likely to eat a hole in your stomach - been there, not good.

Also ask about what else could be contributing - common dietary triggers are caffeine, chocolate and cheese. I know when I'm due, I crave caffeine like you would not believe. I also know that if I give in and consume endless quantities I am in *deep* trouble ultimately, starting with being like Tigger on speed and ending with being a miserable out-of-sorts zombie. Some major headache remedies contain caffeine as an active ingredient - not good if this is a trigger for you.

That rice bag sounds like a good idea instead of my hot water bottle. cold hurts, heat helps....thats just me.

I read the rice bag instructions long ago, so I remember how to make them (who could forget how to sew a square or rectangle lol. But I forget if I need real rice or minute rice......will minute rice work for a temporary bag, its all I have in the house and don't want to drive with a headache.

Thanks for the suggestion, I would not have thought of that.

About 15 years ago I started getting these killer headaches - shimmery distortion, blind spots when I tried to read, etc. Finally went to my doctor, who said they were migraines, gave me a prescription for pain medicine. I just couldn't see developing migraines after 40, and I wasn't wild about adding another pill to my pharmacy. So I just kept track for a while, and discovered that if I took a decongestant, within 20 minutes everything cleared up.
