OT: moving to Houston in August

We will be relocating for one year because my husband has gotten a placement there. We really want the kids to go to American school for one year. We will be living on the west side of town (westheimer and ring 8 for those familiar). Any hot tips for fabric stores? All the children will be in school then so I am hoping to do some sewing!!! At last! On mondays, 2 of my kids are finished at 11.30 which leaves me no time to do anything. Otherwise, one comes home at 1 pm everyday. I am looking forward to a more routine schoolday.

Be ready to expect a very different climate.

My brother & SIL live near Westheimer and Dairy-Ashford, there's an excellent TSWLTH on the south side of W-- very near that location. And a Wally World. Although I've visited many times, I have not discovered any memorable or local-based F-stores.

Plan to hit the Harwin wholesale shopping district (Houston is a port city so you can fill up a container to send home). ;)

And get ready for Taco Cabana (one of my favorite things about Texas).

I will get some info from a friend as to good fabric stores, not near where you will be but if you plan a visit to Galveston or the Space Center you can also shop some of them. One of our regular posters live in the general area where you will be so surely she will post.

Lee, There's another Cape? ;) Kirsten comes from Cape Cod or close to it. I have a tiny little Cape Cod cottage there and as far as I'm conceerned, it is THE Cape! OF course I know I'm letting myself in for trouble by say that but that's OK. Juno

well, i agree with you :) i'd love to be able to have even a summer place on the Cape, but it's soo expensive & i'd have to get a farm sitter. actually, if i won the Lottery, i'd have a farm on either the Cape or Nantucket (like there's enough land for that...). i guess i'll settle for my farm :) lee

Very huge quilting show there each fall at the convention center. Plan on attending.

No, That's just propaganda. There's only One Cape, The rest are just figments of the imagination. Especially to New Englanders or wannabe New Englanders like me. Juno

Trust me, I don't have the money. We bought our place in 1970. IF our kids would let us sell it we would be very well off. If I would let me sell it, we would be very well off. We could never replace what we have let alone get something else there. It's a shame to see all the little places like ours torn down so a trophy house can be built in it's place. It's tiny, and fun. We even have indoor plumbing. LOL and very little up keep. Juno

there's an absolutely adorable little cape (i think it may have 2 bedrooms) on the bay side of the Cape, an a 50' by 80' lot...asking price is $950k. it's amazing what a house on a sand bar costs! ;) at least on the bayside the lot isn't getting smaller every year... several towns are passing zoning ordinances against teardowns so a McMansion can be built. i'm surprised the Cape towns aren't all over that. historic preservation is big in NE. lee

Kirsten, Welcome to Houston in advance! For a while till, we bought our home, we lived off Memorial & Dairy Ashford and I loved going to Buttons and Bows, which sells fine fabrics, various unique buttons, Swiss embroidery and smocking materials. It is in a small sidewalk shopping center on Memorial near D.A. Across from the store is/was another fabric store that sells/sold reproduction fabric. It was a fabulous place to spend a few hours. Someone mentioned that there is a TSWLTH near where you will live, and there's also Hancock's nearby as well as I'm sure you'll easily find a Hobby Lobby.

High Fashion Design is a fabric store of more than 30,000 square feet that is downtown on Louisiana St. I went a couple times before the city started the street projects in that area which, I understand are now complete, but I haven't gone back yet.

Now we live outside the city limits on the NW side between Houston and Cypress, just off Hwy 290, which is the road to Austin, less than 2 hours from the house. Near where you go over to Galveston, there are 2 great fabric stores, Sew Contempo and Fabrics ETC. I can't remember their street addresses, but they are in the phone book. I have purchased fabric, buttons and other accessories from both stores and have found the clerks polite and knowledgeable about the merchandise, which is important to me. Emily

I can see I am in for a treat. Maybe I have to get a job to pay for all the fabric. It is more than twice the price here and the selection is not that good (but I am in walking distance to a fabric store in Heimdal-very nice when i can't find what I need in my stash). A quilters convention to boot! Too good to be true.

I've made this an OT since many people can't find much sewing here. Except for a lovely fabric store in Orleans. Nice place, nice people. Depending on what town this almost million dollar house is in there has been a lot of erosion on the bay side. We are in North Eastham and our year round neighbor called, after a bad storm, this past fall to say that the erosion was very bad. A good part of the parking lot on our beach was destroyed and there are several houses that are hanging on the edge. Some have as little as ten feet of dune left before the fall down. Where do you llive in NE. Juno

oh no! much as i love the sea, i'm too nervous about beach erosion to live too close. i'm in NH, southern edge of the Lakes region, & conveniently close (ok, i measure distance in hours, not miles. under an hour is close) to several nice fabric stores (& yarn stores). i have a little farm with llamas, goats, chickens & sugar maples :) lee

I've been to a lovely fabric Store in Keene. My youngest daughter took me there a few years ago. She lives in Amherst,MA. It took us a little over an hour from her house. Juno
