I wonder how she is, has anybody heard her? I believe she said she & DH were in Hammond, which didn't take a direct hit, so I thought she would have been safe there. OTH, they may not have electricity back up yet. My nephew, whose home in Waveland, MS was virtually destroyed by Katrina, suffered almost no damage this time. He called yesterday, they were on the way home. I know my siblings & families living in New Orleans went to MS, and were safe, but don't know when they planned to return home because of the electricity wasn't back on in many parts of the city. We are home, safe, but decidedly ragged around the edges. Hammond was hit much harder than N.O., and Baton Rouge got it really bad. We were in a motel, when suddenly all the power went out around noon Monday. Not just in that town, but all the little burgs around. Only one place in the whole parish (county) had any electricity at all. After two hot, sticky days and sleepless nights, we learned on Wednesday that power was not likely to come back for at least another day. I called home, the answering machine picked up so I knew the juice was on, we packed up our belongings and came home. We are lucky that we have lights and a/c, it is very sporadic in the town, but our part was apparently only out for less than a day. Other sections close by have been out for five days, and Entergy is hoping to get them all back up by the end of the week. At present, we have two good friends occupying the guest room as they have no power at home, plus we have a church dependant of theirs on an air mattress in the studio.
We never used to evacuate as dh always had to be at his desk until the last minute, but now he is retired I think we will change plans. I am pondering the idea of perhaps checking with the airport to see where I can go on a non-stop flight, I know Atlanta, Memphis and Charlotte are all possibilities, plus D.C., so maybe next time we will go well away and make a vacation of it. Come to think of it, a week spent playing in the Smithsonian, or exploring some city we have never visited, begins to sound like a good idea.
