OT: Paint old metal hardware with latex paint?

Since every off topic question I have ever asked has been expertly answered I need to know now, (and can't find the answer on google) if very old metal drawer handles can be painted with latex paint (primed first of course).

I ask because I am painting my kitchen cabinets. I took off the knobs on the cupboards and am not putting them back because there are little finger holds for opening. The drawers do not have them though. I hate the old hardware, its so ugly. but also I have gone over budget with supplies and if I don't have to buy new hardware for the drawers I am not going to. I really want the whole kitchen to look seamless, so I thought if I repaint the old handles the same color it would disguise them.

What does everyone think?

TIA!

Latex won't stick well to metal. Use a metal-type paint. Krylon has a rainbow of colors so there should be something you like.

One of my favorite tricks is to put on a base color, then hold the spray can fairly far away and depress the button only half-way. This produces small drops of the accent color. Can be a nice effect. (A few years back I had a limited budget, and gold, silver, and teal green spray paint. Everything went verdigris-toned.)

Ok, good to know. Thanks! I was afraid of wasting my time. 30 seconds to ask is better than a day to do it and remove it!

the effect sounds very interesting. I would like to see a coffee table top look like that!

Thanks very much,

Easily fixed with a rental router. ;-) Either you or DH can use it to create that little finger hold. When I remodeled three summers ago, I loved a certain very expensive drawer hardware. In order to save a bit, I had all the upper cabinets made with the finger slot, and just put pulls on the lower cabinets. The nice cabinet guys put the finger slots in *all* the cabinets, so I could have avoided the pulls altogether, but I loved them sooooo much...... ;-}

There actually is a primer you can use on metal and then paint with latex.......I can't remember the name now, came in a spray can. I got it at Home Depot and used it to paint some metal boxes with the same latex paint I used on the bathroom walls. Ask the paint person at the hardware store about the primer. It worked well and those boxes get go on and off the shelves at least once a day and the paint hasn't chipped and stills good.

A router? I have (I mean my DAD has...) one of those. Thats something to think about. I haven't touched the drawers yet, but I am done cleaning and sanding the cupboards and have 1/2 of them primed. I will have to see what I (I mean my DAD...) can do about figuring out how to work that router. (I mean get my Dad to do it LOL)

Thanks for the tip!

Not if you want it to last!! Sand them, prime them with metal primer, then get a spray can of metal-specific paint to match the woodwork. (think auto-supply stores).
