[OT] Restaurants in NYC

While we are in NYC in June, my DD and DSIL will be celebrating their 24th wedding anniversary. I would really like to plan a memorable dinner with them and the kids. I had thought about the Tavern-on-the-Green, but I'm told that it is passé (for old ladies' afternoon tea was the way they put it). Another recommendation was for the Rainbow Room, but we are not packing "formal" clothes.

So, can any of you recommend a really nice restaurant, suitable for very-well-behaved 11- and 17-year olds, something that the anniversary couple will remember fondly? I want to nail down reservations ASAP. We are quite eclectic in the foods we like, Italian, seafood, French, Classic American, Asian, etc. I would prefer not to go to a "chain" establishment. I am budgeting $7-800.

Beverly, A couple years ago my wife and I ventured to the City for our anniversary and we dined at Babo, one of the TV cooking celeb Mario Batali's restaurants. Perhaps one of the best dining experiences I have ever enjoyed and save the pricy wine my wife enjoyed the tab was very reasonable.

Italian and I do recommend you make reservations early.I waited until the last week and found I could not get them but we chanced it and walked in as they keep a half dozen or so tables for walk-ins, we only waited an hour or so but took a seat at the bar with another couple we were chatting with.I don't do formal not for anyone especially to plunk down good money for food.

You are correct to book a reservation ASAP, as June is a very busy month for NYC restaurants. Between weddings, graduation celebrations and so forth. The good thing is June is not quite full tourist mode in NYC so things maybe a tad easier.

For Italian, try Felidia, which is one of the Italian restaurants run by Lidia of PBS fame. http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:77nRN8xf-DcJ:nymag.com/listings/restaurant/felidia/+Lidia%27s+Restaurant+New+York&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=usScoot around the NYMag listings for ideas then start dialling. Onething to remember is many restaurants, at least in Manhattan tend to be"slow" between Memorial Day and Labour Day as much of the town thins outon weekends, off to their country/beach homes. This may give you someroom in terms of crowded bookings. Wednesdays are theatre days inManhattan and thus many restaurants are booked with bus/car loads of outof towers in for the day to see whatever is the "hottest" thing onBroadway. This too also means reservations are tight. Whatever you do, if you make reservations make sure they are guaranteed, and that everyone understands what the deal is. It is not uncommon for restaurants to over-book and or adjust/cancel reservations if a large party books after yours did, or a party shows up with more people than booked and waves money about, or any number of such reasons.

Best of luck and enjoy your time in NYC! While you are hear don't forget to check out the Lower East-Side and Mid-Town fabric store hot spots.

Thanks! Since we are going to be having many in NYC, we'll keep that on the list of possibilities. We have 5 1/2 days, so potentially 16+ meals out. Our lodgings are on the east side of Central Park at 88th, but if we find ourselves on the west side when we're hungry, sounds great.

I'm very much afraid there will not be any time for fabric shopping. :-( We are seeing two shows (Lion King and Spamalot), going to the Met and the Guggenheim, having afternoon tea at the American Girl store, taking the full Circle Tour, plus all the other touristy-things-to-do-in-NYC. My DD has a high school chum living in NY who had generously offered to be our tour guide.

Thanks again,

Beverly

He puts his pants on one leg at a time, and he's probably as impressed by someone who has a skill such as your sewing as other people might be by his skill as an actor - or his celebrity.

Hi Beverly,

You might consider River Cafe, just over the (Brooklyn) Bridge in Brooklyn. It's pretty room special occasion food like the Rainbow Room and TOTG but unlike them the food's supposed to be good.

Also, check the website egullet.org-- they're serious foodies and they're pretty friendly to folks posting your kind of question.

Thanks! Wow, with so many recommendations, we are going to be hard pressed to make a decision. DD's friend lives in Brooklyn, IIRC.

Not a restaurant, but I've heard two reviews of the Poiret exhibit in NYC-- both rave. May still be on when you're there, maybe?

I'm a member so I get their e-mail notifications, the Poiret exhibit will be there through August 5. DD and I have been trying to think of something we could send the rest of the family to do while we see:

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! I was able to make reservations for the five of us on DD & DSIL's anniversary. We're planning on walking back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge after dinner. I'm sure this will be an Anniversary to Remember!

Thanks so much,

Beverly

Art-wise there's the rest of the Met, the Cooper-Hewitt is nearby

If they run, the path around the reservoir in Central Park is relatively close, pretty and well-kept, and a very New York place to run--it's 1.5 miles for the reservoir path or up to 10K for once around the whole park--maps at

Or would they be interested in a Mets or Yankees game (or minor league ball at Coney Island)? That's a much longer time block-- staying with gender stereotypes (that I realize may or may not apply-- apologies if I'm way off) you gals could consider shopping or pedicures (widely available dirt cheap here as well as at spa-type places that aren't cheap), or another museum. FWIW, HTH-

Oh, good. I hope you like it.

Walking back over the bridge is classic, lovely, great way to end/continue the evening. (You haven't asked but yes, it's safe until late.)

I'm sure it will be wonderful. I read several online reviews, they were all laudatory.

I'm not normally paranoid about being out late and alone here, and we'll be a good-sized group, so it had not occurred to me to worry, but thanks for the heads-up. We have reservations at 6:00, probably early by NYC standards. ;-)
