[OT] Restaurants in NYC

No, one man (my SIL), my DD, one grandson (17), one granddaughter (11), and me. None except DD and I would be interested in the Poiret exhibit. We are sending the guys off alone on Wednesday while we gals go to tea at the American Girl store and do some shopping.

*I* would have loved to take in a BB game. Or better yet a Stanley Cup playoff game, but Buffalo was eliminated. But I'm the only sports fan in the group, so that's not gonna happen.

DD would love that, I can't stand for anyone to touch my feet. We *are* hoping to visit Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany just for giggles. We'll just have to wait and see how the time plays out, so much to see and do, so little time.

Thanks, Sara!

Beverly,

Do try if at all possible to go see the Statue of Liberty, which is just amazing to see up close and in person, and possibly Ellis Island. You won't be sorry.

Oh, I absolutely second Melinda's suggestion. To visit NYC and not see the Ellis Island exhibit would be a great loss!

The Circle Tour goes out past Lady Liberty, so we should get good views. As far as I know they no longer allow people to climb up inside the statue, but DH and I did that in '64. We are very much hoping to get off and tour Ellis Island.

Thanks,

Beverly

When we went 4 years ago, it had been closed since 9/11/2001 for security reasons.

They have MAJOR BIG-TIME security there. Take as little as possible, and don't bring cameras with sensitive film in them because they won't hand-scan them and require them to go through the x-ray machine.

Good. Along the same lines, how about the Tenement Museum?

And afterwards, stop by Gus's pickles and if everyone eats meat, Katz's deli. Or if that's too too, Laboratorio del Gelato is also on Orchard Street and they've got some of the best gelato in the city. Also don't miss the Empire State Building. There are always lines to get to the upstairs observation deck, but the view on a clear day (or night) is worth the wait.

Sounds good. Sorry I don't have any teenage-specific recommendations, though.

Yes, there are LOTS of museums. The pass is a huge bargain but it gets overwhelming feeling that you need to see everything you can, if that makes sense. OTOH, the Met's huge and MoMA is big, but the rest are pretty manageable in size especially if you pick and choose by which specific exhibits interest you.

This can be a fast in-and-out, and it's fun--At BG, up to the designer floors, then down for the tons of makeup in the basement. Henri Bendel would be a decent (and nearby) substitute for BG, similar priciness but smaller store.

Sometimes it feels that way if you live here, too.

Ok, stoooooppppp!!!! We have only 5 days in NYC, and that's in the middle of a 21 -day trip. We cannot possibly add more to our already overloaded itinerary. ;-} We are all meat-eaters, so the deli suggestion will be added to the file. DGD is lactose intolerant, so for the most part we try to look for desserts with some non-dairy items. Oh, good, I see on their web site they also have sorbet. Perfect!

That's on everybody's *MUST SEE* list. And the NYC passes let us bypass the lines, I think.

Not to worry, DGS and DSIL have been actively researching places to go, things to see, so I'm sure they will be fine.

Perfect sense. I was a little reluctant to buy the 7-day passes, but then I realized the 3-day would just leave us frustrated, trying to cram everything into three days.

I purchased a membership to the Met, so we receive e-mail information on exhibits. DD and I have been occupied almost full-time figuring out how to get in as much as possible without completely boring the kids. So we're alternating "cultural" days (Museums, Spamalot [giggle]) with "fun" days (Circle Cruise, Lion King). I hope. :-\

Thanks for that information, we probably won't actually buy anything, I just have to see those stores. I missed them completely in '64 when I was there for the NY World Fair.

That's true everywhere I think. There are places here I would highly recommend to visitors, but which I have rarely been to myself.

Yes, I've heard there are casinos in Reno!

Tsk! There you go again, causing keyboard and monitor problems.

I was going to suggest the Pool Room at the Four Seasons. But the River Cafe seems just the ticket for that event. Bring monbey. Lots of it. Also check out the Zagat directory. Zagat says of the River CXafe "Perhaps the most romantic spot in (or out) of town."

Take the Staten Island Ferry. It is free. Best place to see the giant hole in the now gap tooth Manhattan skyline where the World Trade Center used to be. Best free tour in the world.

I'm packing three pieces of high-limit plastic. ;-) I don't know how romantic it will be with mother/mother-in-law and two teen-aged children along, but celebrate we will! We've decided against the walk across the Brooklyn Bridge because we have tickets to go to the Observation Deck at the Empire State Building after dinner.

Already on the itinerary. We are also taking one of the Circle Line Tours around Manhattan, probably at night.

Have a very good time, and bring back lots of warm memories.

Thanks, Joanne, I am sure we will. The kids are at a very good age, and at the right place in school (American History all year), to appreciate all the special historical sites, and they will love the plays in NYC.
