OT: snow, snow, cold

It started snowing about noon on Saturday. Wet and Heavy white stuff. The light flickered on and off during the afternoon and evening. At 10PM they went OFF. We went to bed and got up Sunday to a very cold house and of course no power and about a foot of snow. My favorite dogwood tree took a bad hit and we'll probably have to take it down. Went out looking for a diner for breakfast and most of them were closed, no power there either. We picked up hot coffee at the local deli, I had some apple cake I made on Saturday morning and that was breakfast. Drove to DS house, he didn't have power either but he was able to heat his family room with the gas fireplace. We stayed there all day, He cooked dinner on the grill and we left about 9 to come home. Still no power. When we got up this morning, the house was 43. Off to look for a diner again. Found one open and crowed but warm. Ate breakfast, came home and success. The power was on. The house is getting warm and all is right with the world. Juno

My son who lives near us, lost power Saturday around 3 and it still isn't on! Hard with two kids at home (school is closed), and no running water! They do have a generator and space heater, so they're not freezing! They will be here later today for dinner and trick or treating. My DH and I were crazy enough to go to the PSU/Illinois football game in State College on Saturday. I had so many layers on, I could hardly move and had hand and foot warmers. Arrived home yesterday to about 8 inches of snow. We never lost power, thank goodness!

We watched that game on the tube and it sure looked cold to me. You are a braver person than me. I hope your son get power soon. It's just no fun being cold.

Glad you are all right; when I saw the pics of the snow in that area on our news, I was thinking of you, hoping you were ok. You seem to have a hard year this year, with Irene before and now the early snow. However, it seems that a lot of folks there in the US have independent power sources or at least a non-electric device for cooking. Three cheers for Winter BBQ-ing! ;-)

At least the pics got my husband to move; we keep the 'other' set of wheels for the family car where he has his scaffolding parts. So whenever it's time for changing them, I have to remind him to bring them here. This spring he was very late so that we didn't have them changed until May or so. Anyway, I'll get the winter tires on the family car tomorrow. Today is a holiday( All Saints) and nothing doing, but tomorrow I'll take the wheel rims to the repair shop and have the new winter tyres fitted and mounted. Dang, in Spring we found that the old ones had no profile left on the inside and the guy said that it was no use to buy new ones then, and now, after a very, very mild autumn I find myself rudely awakened by the heavy snowfall in your area. Well, I'm not exactly expecting snow from next week on, but we have a regulation here in Germany that fines you quite heavily if they catch with the wrong tyres on in wintery road conditions. And I remember that last Winter, I was just in time; I heard on the forecast that is was to be frosty with a chance of snow, had the wheels changed and from that day on on we had quite heavy (for our area where a single snowflake on the roads causes public life to collapse) snowfall and snow that stayed until shortly after New Year (or so, my memory fades a little here).

Anyway, I' glad that nobody from here seems to have taken any harm in that nasty wintery bout (Alice in PA, too!).

U.

Thanks Ursula, I've reached the point in life where I know I can't fight nature and so try to look at all these weather things as an adventure. I'm fortunate to have family close by and that makes a big difference when Mom Nature takes over. MY oldest granddaughter, who is 25, says that it's Mother Nature with PMS. I love that description. I'm happy to hear that our bad weather was enough to convince you DH that it's time to put on winter tires. Drive safe. Juno

Thanks, Ursula. My son and his family are still without power, and may be several more days! They were able to make a more permanent connection to their generator, so they now have power to the kitchen, and water, but no heat. They can't use the stove or oven either! They had dinner here last night, and baths and showers, and then went trick or treating! They live in a very wooded area, and no one has power!

Sorry you had such a cold dark start to the season.

I'm very happy for you that your power is back on, now you can sew! ;-)

I'm not sure about when. I have my first cataract done tomorrow and I know I'll need glasses when everything is done. I hope I can sew well enough to sew. Juno

Good luck! I have needed glasses after my cataract surgery for reading, but they came so close with the distance prescription that I could easily drive without glasses... if I could see the speedometer. ;-}

My problem is a have astigmatism in both eyes and it's unlikely I Can really function without glasses. I'm promised better night vision and clearer vision but with out forking over a lot o f money I need glasses for the astigmatism.

That's one of the reasons I opted to remain nearsighted. That and the fact that I spend more time reading and doing other close work (I used to sew, and may again any day now), and very little time driving or doing long-distance viewing. I got a lovely pair of glasses that spend most of their time in my pocket around the house. Either that, or I'm searching for where I left them. They're frameless, so a little hard to find.

I have a treadle sewing machine, a treadle iron ? lingers And seams in polyester just won't yield to fingers.

I'm glad your power is back on, but I'm awfully sorry about your dogwood tree. I planted two red (it's actually dark pink but they call them red) trees this past spring. Then it immediately shot up to 100 degrees and stayed there. We watered every day, but I'm not sure they are going to survive. :( It's been a rough year for dogwoods.

I hope you don't have another round of that four letter word any time soon!!!! (our weather guy was talking about flurries this morning here. I was ready to go through the screen and slap him silly!! Back in the 60's tomorrow though.)

Oh, and I see no reason why there couldn't be apple cake for breakfast even when the power is on!! ;) Sharon

Please excuse the first non post. I had my first cataract surgery yesterday and not seeing everything well because Bill just put in my drops.

The tree bothers me because i t was from a my favorite uncle and we've had it about 40 years. I don't know what the average life of dogwood is. They grow well in the wild here, but for some reason are hard to get going when you plant them

If I see snow around here again before Christmas I'll do the slapping!

Everyone should eat apple cake for breakfast, it tastes good. Yesterday I h ad breakfast at 2:00, couldn't eat before going, so I had some rice pudding. That tasted darn good too. Juno

This is Thursday...they still have no power...since Saturday afternoon. Schools are back in session, and the snow is all gone, but some roads are closed and power lines are still down!
